William Bannatyne Thomson was a colonial political officer who died when his ship sank en route back to Britain in November 1917.
Can anyone supply any more information on him,his war service and the ship he was on?
Thanks

Hi Hugh
I have some details which I've recorded in an ROH I've written for Cargilfield School. Just wanted to check we aren't looking at the same memorial as William Bannatyne Thomson and William Denny Ward are on that one too. I notice you have posted wanting details of both.
Regards.

Hi Hugh
Here is my entry for the Cragilfield School ROH which I should mention I consider copyright. If you find any info that is different I would appreciate if you could let me know. As you can see I believe he was aboard the ship you mentioned in light of documents that have appeared on Ancestry.co.uk and Findmypast.co.uk recently.
Regards

Thomson, William Bannatyne: Barrister-at-Law and Colonial Political Officer in Nigeria. Born around 1878 at Brechin. A son of John Thomson, Bank Clerk, and Jessie A Thomson of Newton House, Nairn then 31 Phillimore Gardens, Kensington, London. Husband of Julia Anna Robertson. Mr Thomson was educated at Cargilfield Preparatory School [1891], Fettes College [1891-1897] and University College, Oxford. He was employed as a Barrister-at-Law and then as a Colonial Political Officer in Nigeria. He was presumed drowned on 09/11/1917, aged 40, whilst a passenger aboard the SS Umgeni, an Admiralty supply ship that left the Clyde in a convoy on 07/11/1917, being bound for Lagos, Nigeria. Most reports state that the convoy ran into bad weather and was dispersed. The last reported sighting of the SS Umgeni was that she was struggling in the storm. The ship was never seen again though wreckage and some bodies were washed up on the west coast of Ireland. A "Marine Register of Deceased Passengers" on www.Findmypast.co.uk lists a Mr W B Thomson as being a passenger aboard the SS Umgeni and as missing. On www.Ancestry.co.uk, under “England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations)” there is an entry for William Bannatyne Thomson which reads “Thomson, William Bannatyne of the Crown Colony of Nigeria died on or since 9 November 1917 at sea. Confirmation of Julia Anna Robertson or Thomson, widow. Sealed London 30th December.” He is mentioned in the The Fettes College Register 1870-1922. |
