UKNIWM Ref: 44421

Location – on Garlieston seafront next to the bowling green at OS Map Ref NX 478 464. Please note that there is also a memorial in the hamlet of Sorbie but confusingly it is this one in Garlieston that is the Sorbie memorial. The one in Sorbie itself is for Upper Sorbie!!

I have done my best with the transcription but this memorial has quite a problem with oxidation (?) on the lead lettering (probably from the sea air) and the Gs and Cs are particularly difficult.

JOHN HAMISH MALET-WARDEN is remembered on the Douglas Ewart High School Memorial in Newton Stewart
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=5394

and on the Challoch (All Saints) Episcopal Church WW2 Memorial
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=4747

Thanks to former Squadron Leader Denis Sawden of Newton Stewart for the background to the addition of Malet-Warden's name to this memorial.
A couple of years ago members of the congregation of Challoch Church researched the names of the WW2 memorial and found that only Malet-Warden was not remembered on any local civic memorial.

John Hamish had come to Wigtownshire in the 1930's with his mother and other siblings after the breakdown of his parents' marriage. They lived in a house on the Galloway House Estate in Garlieston - at that time owned by Lady Forteviot, a former school friend of John Hamish's mother.
John Hamish attended the Douglas Ewart High School and was a member of the local Air Cadets.

The Sorbie Parish War Memorial in Garlieston seemed the most appropriate location and so his name was added there.

Thanks also to John Hamish's extended family in Ireland and in the UK, not least for their introduction to Denis Sawden.

I have brought this posting forward from page 3.

I will make some enquires.

The two missing names have now been added to the panel.
It's a pity that the lettering is slightly different but ......

A big thank you to Lynn Morley for the photos.
