This WM unveiled on 27/6/1920 is in red Peterhead Grantie nearly 17ft high with rustic base 4ft 6ins. Erected by Messrs Dods and Sons Dumfries with toal cost around £250.00. Dr. Morton very kindly gave the site, which formed part of his garden at front of Fairview. Dr Morton served as as Lieut in RAMC and is recorded on the Dunscore Roll of Honour; and remembered on family grave in Dunscore Churchyard.
The frist 8 names of the WM are in Rank oder; then the next 32 appear in alphabetical order on two panels - starting on left, the panels show names, rank and service.
We have men on 14 different WM's; and have 15 men of Dunscore Roll of Honour; 4 men named on Craig Church stained glass window and 1 at Tariff Church. I man remembered along with parish members on two Church stained windows in Applegarth Church. Men of rolls or Church Plaques in Glencairn; Keir; Tongland; Crossmichael; Dalry; Applegarth.
1 man of each of roll of honour for - Australian; Canadian; and New Zealand. Many of the Scottish National War Memorial.
For 1939-19545 Dunscore place - In Grateful memory of those who fell in the ' Second Great War' (any others with second great war?) this for 9 men unveiled in Nov 1947 Has 2 brothers also down on Glencain WM, plaques and rolls; and man with tree and plaque in Closeburn.
Dunscore WM is the only local WM that I know about that places the Union Jack over the WM a few days before & after the 11th of 11th each year - do anyone else do this?
