GEORGE COUNTER is also listed on the Carsphairn Memorial in Kirkcudbrightshire.
He is listed here with his brother RICHARD COUNTER and were two of the five sons of Sergeant Major George Counter of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and of Elizabeth (McKenzie) Counter.
George (S/3308) and Richard (S/3309) 2nd A&SH obviously enlisted together but George had served previously, joining the Argylls in 1902 as a boy bandsman age 15.
Sgt. Major George Counter died in 1898 in Stirling and two of his sons, George and James were sent to the Royal Military School in Chelsea.
Bandsman (9437) James Counter A&SH was awarded the DCM for his actions as a stretcher-bearer during Jan-Mar 1915.
George was killed on the Somme 20/7/1916 while Richard, who also served with the Gordons (S/19280), died from influenza on 2/2/1919 while with the 16th London Regt. (556634) and is buried in Cologne.
On his re-enlistement in August 1914 at Stirling, George gave his occupation as a "waiter" (thanks to Anne A for that) which may explain his address on the local RoH as the Salutation Hotel, Carsphairn.

Looking at the MIC index for "Counter" and "Argyll" it seems that the oldest brother William served as a Pte & Sgt (S/2673) and the youngest, Charles, as Pte (1114).

Stirling Central Library have sent to me a copy of a page from the Stirling Observer dated December 25, 1915. Patriotic Stirling Families.
"The accompanying reproductions are from photographs of the five sons and son-in-law of the late Sergt.-Major Counter, 3rd Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (the old Stirlingshire Militia) who are at present time in the service of their country. All the sons were born in Striling Castle where their father was about 25 years ago stationed as sergeant-major of the Militia.
Willie, the eldest son, who is quiet and retiring by nature, was for several years before enlisting in the A&SH (Kitchener's Army) a plate-layer on the railway between Stirling and Bannockburn.
George, the next son, was taken with his brother James, after the death of their father, to the Duke of York's School for Soldiers' Sons, and when old enough for boys service joined the band of the 1st A&SH. When only a lad of 14 or 15 George saw service at the South African War with the band.
James Counter (third son) joined the 1st Battalion of the A&SH at Chatham a number of years ago. He spent some time in Malta and India with his regiment and was sent to the front at the end of last year. He is an all-round sportsman and while in India won medals for both football and cricket. He was always a great favourite with the men, by whom he was familiary known as "Sunny Jim"
Richard (fourth son) is fairly well known in the Stirling District, he having been for three years under-footman with Mr. Crum, late of Auchenbowie. He enlisted in the A&SH shortly after the outbreak of war.
Charles, the youngest son, was in the 2nd A&SH at Fort George and left there in August last with his regiment for the fighting line. He was amongst the first of the "kilties" to land in France, and is now a prisoner in Germany.
George Thain [husband of the oldest child, Sarah Counter] had no previous military training before joining Kitchener's Army in August last. He was drafted from Stirling Castle to Woolwich, then out to the front with the 1st A&SH. He was a plate layer and resided at Springfield Place."

In 1911 William and George, both railway surfacemen, were boarding with George and Sarah Thain. Charles (16) was with his mother and two younger sisters.

Not on the memorial, probably due to his family emigrating some years before.
