WW1
ARGYLL & SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS
Lieut. Archibald G. Moir

(Glasgow Herald 4th May 1915)
"There have been circulated in Alloa and district during the past week rumours of the death of Lieutenant A. Gifford Moir, in the battle of Monday 25th ult, which has been fatal to so many of his comrades of the 7th Battalion A. and S.H. (T.F.) and these are now verified by the receipt yesterday of a letter from one of his brother officers. Gifford Moir was a personality in the town of Alloa, and also in the county of Clachmannan, and he was extremely popular amongst his schoolfellows and contemporaries in public school life. His prominence in field sports, his keenness and proficiency as a Territorial officer, combined with a exceptionally sunny disposition and frank manner, made him a general favourite. His untimely death at the age of 25 is mourned by the whole community of Alloa and dirstrict. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy, Banstead Hall, Surrey, and Fettes College, where his natural bent towards athletics sports was fostered with good effect, as at Fettes he was captain of the cricket team and carried off the gold medal for athletics in 1907 and 1908. He passed his examination as a law agent in July last, andf was looking forward to joining the legal firm of Messrs J.W. and A.P. Moir, of which his father is a partner, in addition to being factor to the Earl of Mar and Kellie."
