Pictures will be taken. Personally I'm pretty happy with the new location. it is pretty difficult for somebody from outside the city to attend on a working day. |

After two and a half years the struggle to get the Mains memorial refurbished and re-located was officially realised today when the unveiling and re dedication took place. On a suitably sombre and driech day the ceremony, attended by council representatives, council officials, members of the Black Watch Association and other interested parties, heard Colonel Rose say a few opening words and took part in a short service of rededication led by the Rev David J Randall. Unfortunately, due to the memorial not yet being delisted, the inscribed tablet bearing the names of the men has still to be replaced but an information board has been installed next to the memorial. The council have confirmed that the damaged plaque will be replaced once the paperwork comes through from Historic Scotland. Thanks to Tom McCluskey for arranging the event.

Very well done to all those concerned for their hard work and commitment to have the memorial cleaned and relocated. |

I received an invitaion from Dundee Lord Provost Bob Duncan to attend a memorial service at the Mains memorial which took place last Thursday 8th November. Attended by members of The Black Watch assocciation, The lord Provost, Members of the council and other interested parties, the service went well. Col Rose on behalf of the BWA and The Lord Provost for the city Council both laid wreaths. The Lord Provost has confirmed that he intends for this to be an annual event. I am glad to report that one year on from its rededication the memorial has not suffered from any maltreatment and the decision to not only refurbish but to also relocate it seems vindicated. |

Excellent to hear, Ian.
Next time I'm in the area I will make a point of stopping and visiting the memorial. |

A few photos I took on a recent visit. The new location is very good in my opinion and, most importantly, is secure from the attentions of those who might show disrespect.
Looking at the deterioration of the name panel from this forum's first images to the current position it is clear how close this memorial was to utter destruction. Well done to all those involved in the successful relocation campaign.
Note the information board has been amended since November 2012 to included the name of "# Glen", who is last on the name panel and out of alphabetical order as presumably a later addition.

Close inspection suggests to me the inscription reads "G Glen" and leads me to believe this could be the last-named lad. His death coming so late in the day and his attachment to a non-local unit might account for the delay in having his name added...

The Mains memorial was brought back to mind as I am including it in a talk I will be giving next week.
On reviewing this thread, I note there was a lot of discussion about repairing the name panel on the memorial, to ensure the names were not lost.
Does anyone know if this was ever completed?
The last photos taken on the thread are now five years old, how is the memorial today? |

This is now WMR report 60828. While this number was raised in around 2014, the location given was the old location. I have now rectified this, and made a number of other enhancements to the report, which should refresh overnight.
While doing that I checked the listing, and the memorial is still listed. That, too, has not been updated for the new location, as far as I can tell. |

David, The WMR report now has images from September 2019 which show that the names panel has indeed been repaired. |
