I saw this item on the BBC website today.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/tayside_and_central/6671703.stm

I don't know how long it will stay online so I have taken the liberty of copying the article and accompanying photos. I hope they don't mind.

From the text it appears that there are 2 memorials to this man in Cowie, a plaque and this new bust, both unlisted on UKNIWM. As I have not visited, I don't know the precise location. Carlisle Everiss is also commemorated on the new Cowie civic memorail.

BBC news article...............

"WWII hero pilot statue unveiled

A statue honouring a heroic World War II pilot who was killed in action has been unveiled in the Stirlingshire village where he died. New Zealander Carlisle Everiss lost control of his Spitfire over Cowie in 1941 but managed to steer it towards a local wood before crashing. The 26-year-old was pulled from the wreckage by three local residents but died after being given the last rites. Residents in Cowie have raised £12,000 to erect a bronze bust of the pilot. Local councillor Gerard O'Brien said: "What is being done in Cowie will echo for generations to come. "This pilot gave his life for the village. If it were not for him, the village would have been destroyed and a lot of people would have died. "Once in a generation a guy like this comes along. We should not forget what he did and the statue is a way of saying thank you." Cllr O'Brien said he hoped the pilot would also be awarded the New Zealand award for gallantry. Mr Everiss, who was one of a number of foreign pilots stationed at Grangemouth during the war, died after his plane crashed into railway sidings at the Cowie Colliery on 2 October 1941. He was buried at Grandsable Cemetery near Polmont. A plaque was put up in memory of the hero in the 1970s after local resident John Craig went to New Zealand to trace Mr Everiss' family. A war memorial and miners' memorial were established in the village recently and prompted local businesses, the community council and local residents to raise money for a memorial to Mr Everiss. "

The memorial was erected after locals raised £12,000.

Carlisle Everiss died when his spitfire crashed near Cowie.

A further newspaper article, this time from the Sunday Post of 20th May.

This has a photo of the memorial and gives its location as in the grounds of the bowling club.

“Cowie to honour pilot's sacrifice”. I am sorry to have to point out fact from fiction regarding this article. In all my research regarding the fallen heroes from Cowie, I have found no record of P.O. Carlyle Gray Everiss RNZAF. Sacrificing his life while saving the village of Cowie. The only record I have found states that, Pilot Officer Everiss lost his life when he lost control of the aircraft he was flying, in a tail chase training exercise. The aircraft did not crash at Cowie Bowling Club, as reported in your newspaper but outside the village to the East of Cowie. Although this was an interesting story, we have to distinguish historical fact from myth, had he in fact flown his aircraft away from the village before he crashed there would have been some sort of official recognition of this, in truth there is none. The truth is he was not in control of the aircraft or of where it would come down when he crashed.

This was just a tragic accident which has grown into a myth.

This in no way detracts from the fact that this young airman came from New Zealand and lost his life at Cowie while training to defend this country in its darkest hour.

P.O. Everiss is remembered with honour on Cowie’s War Memorial alongside the other 74 men from Cowie who made the supreme sacrifice in the two world wars. It should be pointed out on behalf of the families from Cowie who lost loved ones in the two world wars, that no single sacrifice, was greater than that made by each and everyone of the men Remembered with Honour on Cowie’s War Memorial.
