I noticed what seemed to be a small plaque on the bench - did it have anything to do with a commemoration?

I'm fairly sure it is not related but I will pop back and check sometime in the next few weeks.

(edit) checked back and the plaque is a memorial to a local and not related to any name on the memorial.

"Serial Range HK535 - HK806 This aircraft was one of a batch of 200 Lancasters ordered from Vckers Armstrong (Castle Bromwich) as Mk.11 Sep41 and changed to Mk.111 Feb43, but built as Mk.1 from Oct43 to Feb45. Up to HK773 had Merlin 22 engines initially installed, and all subsequent Merlin 24 engines. HK788 was delivered to 9 Sqdn Feb45. Took part in the following key Operations: Cologne 2Mar45-Daylight; Essen 11Mar45-Daylight; Dortmund 12Mar45-Daylight; Molbis 7/8Apr45- Lost. Airborne 1837 7apr45 from Bardney to bomb the benzole plant. Homebound, caught fire in flight and dived into the ground at Lyford, 4 miles NNW of Wantage, Berkshire. All are buried in Oxford (Botley) Cemetery, North hinksey. F/O Jeffs and his Flight Engineer, Sgt Higgins, came from Birmingham. At 36, F/S Mousley was at least 16 years senior to the last three listed. From The Scotsman Tuesday 10 April 1923

"Carsphairn War Memorial - The war memorial designed by Captain John W Dods, Dumfries, and erected in memory of the men from the parish of Carsphairn, Kirkcudbrightshire, who fell in the great war, was unveiled on Sunday by Colonel William H Clark Kennedy, V.C. (Canadians), a native of the parish, who came all the way from Montral (sic) to perform the ceremony. Captain Cathcart, of Brockloch, accepted custody of the memorial on behalf of the parish council. Mr Wm McCall MacMillan, of Lamloch, gave an endowment of £100 for the upkeep of the memorial."

Born 1871 in Carsphairn. Son of Thomas and Mary (McRoberts or Baird or Newall) Anderson of Liggate, Carsphairn. Husband of Margaret Boyes (Beattie) Anderson of Liggate and later of Paisley who he married in 1896 in Holywood, Dumfriesshire.
John enlisted in June 1918 in the Remounts Service of the RASC. He died of pneumonia in the Windy Knowe Auxiliary Military Hospital in Blundellsands, near Liverpool.
Died on Service on 11 February 1919 and buried in Carsphairn Parish Churchyard (CWG)

George enlisted in November 1915 and served at the Somme, Arras and Ypres. He was wounded three times and was awarded the Military Medal. He died of wounds in the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station near St.Omer.
Died of wounds 22 July 1918 and buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France.

Augustus Ernest Cathcart, Captain: 2nd Bn. King's Royal Rifle Corps. Age 39.
Born 1875 in Leyburn, Wensleydale, Yorkshire. Son of Colonel The Honourable Augustus Murray Cathcart and of Jeane Mary (Ord-Powlett) Cathcart of Mowbray House, Ripon Yorkshire.
Augustus was gazetted as a 2nd Lt. in the K.R.R. in January 1897; a Lt. in 1899 he then served in South Africa and was Captain in January 1903. He arrived in France on 13 August 1914 and was killed at the Aisne a month later.
Killed in action on 14 September 1914 and buried in Paissy Churchyard, Aisne, France.
The Cathcart family owned land and property in and around Carsphairn including Brockloch House and the Lead Mines at Woodhead.

PTE. GEORGE COUNTER, A.& S.H.
George Counter, Private (S/3308) 2nd Bn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Age 29.
Born 1887 in Stirling. Son of Sergeant Major George Counter of the A&SH and of Elizabeth (McKenzie) Counter.
George enlisted, aged 15, as a Drummer boy in the Argylls on 27 October 1902. He had attended the Duke of York's Royal Military School in Chelsea, London, as the son of a deceased soldier.
George was a waiter at the Salutation Hotel, Carsphairn when he returned to Stirling to enlist in August 1914 (together with his brother Richard S/3309). He joined his battalion in France in January 1915 and was killed on the Somme.
Missing in action 20 July 1916 and listed on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

George (S/3308) and Richard (S/3309) 2nd A&SH obviously enlisted together and were two of the five sons of Sergeant Major George Counter, who died in 1898 in Stirling. Two of his sons, George and James were sent to the Royal Military School in Chelsea.
Bandsman (9437) James Counter, A&SH was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his actions as a stretcher-bearer during Jan-Mar 1915. Richard, who also served with the Gordon Highlanders (S/19280), died from influenza on 2/2/1919 while with the 16th London Regt. (556634) and is buried in Cologne, Germany.

Born 1885 in Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William Findlay Dickson and of Jane (Bell) Dickson of Stroanpatrick, Dalry. Husband of Mary (McMillan) Dickson of Carsphairn who he married in 1913 in Carsphairn.
William was a motor man with the Glasgow Corporation Tramways and was living with his family at 59 Roebank Street, Dennistoun, Glasgow when he enlisted in the Home Hospital Reserve in March 1915. He was Ward Master at the Maryhill Auxiliary Military Hospital in Glasgow. He was discharged from the army due to illness in May 1916 and awarded a Silver War Badge (39183) He died of tuberculosis in Carsphairn.
Died on 26 August 1917 and buried in Carsphairn Parish Churchyard (CWG)
Also named on the Dalry War Memorial and on the Glasgow Corporation Tramways Dennistoun Depot Memorial now in the Parkhead Depot.

Alexander Kenelm Clark Kennedy, Captain: 1/5th Bn. (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 33.
Born 1884 at Henbury, Wimborne, Dorset. Son of the late Captain Alexander William Maxwell Clark Kennedy and of The Honourable Lettice Lucy (Hewitt) Clark Kennedy of Knockgray, Carsphairn.
Alexander was educated at Westminster School and at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was working for the Factories Inspectorate of the Home Office when he joined the Galloway Rifle Volunteers, later the 1/5th KOSB, in October 1906 as a Second Lieutenant. He went, as a Lt., with his battalion to Gallipoli where, in July 1915, he was promoted to Captain and was wounded. He returned home in October before rejoining the battalion in Egypt in 1916. He then served at Romani and Gaza.
Killed in action 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine. Also listed on the Dalbeattie War Memorial.

Born 1888 in London. Son of the late Captain Alexander William Maxwell Clark Kennedy and of The Honourable Lettice Lucy (Hewitt) Clark Kennedy of Knockgray, Carsphairn.
Archibald was educated at Westminster School before he joined the Standard Life Insurance Company, initially in Edinburgh and then from 1912 in Bombay. On his return to the UK in 1914 he worked with the Law, Union and Rock Insurance Company in London until he was gazetted as a second Lieutenant in the 1/5th RSF in September 1914. He was promoted to Lt. in July 1915 and to Captain in June 1916. He served at Gallipoli and in Egypt, Palestine and France and was killed near Moeuvres during the advance on Cambrai.
Killed in action 18 September 1918 and buried in Queant Road Cemetery, Buissy, France.

Charles had been working in Brazil for a number of years and was home for a visit when he enlisted as a Private in the London Scottish. He was selected for a commission in the RFA. He was fatally wounded at the Ancre.
Died of wounds on 16 November 1916 and buried in the St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France. Also listed on the Glencairn Parish War Memorial in Moniaive, Dumfriesshire.

Known as Douglas, he was educated at Ayr Academy and in 1904 joined the Ayrshire Yeomanry. Both brothers are also listed on a plaque (which includes a 3rd brother, Robert who died during the South African War) on an external wall of Carsphairn Parish Church.

GUNNR. JOHN LAMBIE, R.F.A.
John Lambie, Gunner (125679) 460th Battery, Royal Field Artillery. Age 26.
Born 1891 in Carsphairn. Son of James and Janet (Wilson) Lambie of Woodhead, Carsphairn and later of Dalmellington, Ayrshire. John was a shepherd like his father.
Killed in action 20 October 1917 and buried in Artillery Wood Cemetery, Belgium.

David McMillan, Lance Corporal (S/22815) 1st Bn. Cameron Highlanders. Age 31.
Born 1886 in Carsphairn. Son of Robert and Mary Wilson (McLellan) McMillan of Carsphairn and latterly of Twomerkland Farm, Moniaive, Dumfriesshire. David was a ploughman when he enlisted in December 1915.
Missing in action 18 April 1918 and listed on the Loos Memorial, France. Also listed on the Glencairn Parish War Memorial in Moniaive.

SERGT. JOHN MILROY, H.L.I.
John Milroy, Sergeant (19907) 11th Bn. Highland Light Infantry. Age 44.
Born 1871 in Minnigaff, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Police Constable Peter Milroy and of Jame (McLellan) Milroy of Carsphairn. Husband of Agnes (McCall) Milroy who he married in Wishaw in 1896.
John was living with his wife and family in Wishaw, Lanarkshire when he enlisted in September 1914. He had over 20 years service with the local Volunteers and Territorials. He was Mentioned in Despatches for actions during the Battle of Loos in September 1915.
Missng in action 19 December 1915 and listed on the Ypres (Memin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
