James Smith Trimmer 5655/TS Royal Naval Reserve born Portsoy 21/01/1898 died 19/04/1917 aged 19. Commemorated on Portsmouth Naval Memorial Panel 28.

'Trimmer' is shown on CWGC - the war memorial it shows 'Engineer'.

Served on HM Trawler "Lobelia II" (trawler requisioned in 1915) - Mined off Fanad Point, Lough Swilly on 19/04/1917.

In the 1911 census Lillias Smith is living at 59 Schoolhendry Street, Portsoy, widowed, with her son, James (13), and daughter, Lillias (10).

Commemorated on gravestone S9 Portsoy Cemetery (ANESFHS MI Portsoy Cemetery Part 2).

Mentioned in Banffshire Journal on 24/04/17 from which: Joined RNR in June 1916 and was prior to that time an apprentice engineer with Messrs McDonald of Portsoy. He was on furlough a few weeks go.

Also ADJ for same date.

A Recent addition to CWGC - not yet added to Ypres (Menin Gate) memorial. The medal rolls index card has a note that the NoK could not be traced - medals returned and then scrapped?

Born James McBeath Dow, son of Mary Ann Dow. In 1901 resident with mother and also sister (Williamina Wood). James not yet found on 1911 census but Mary Ann Dow is at 35 Seafield Street and has 2 granddaughters with her - Lizzie Calder McBeath and Flora Wood (presumably by her son and daughter respectively).

Donald McBain AB (Mate on CWGC) Mercantile Marine S.S. "Ballogie" (Aberdeen) b Portsoy d 09/11/1917 age 61. Commemorated on Tower Hill Memorial.

Son of the late James and Susan McBain (nee Reach), resident in Schoolhendry Street (1881 census). Husband of Williamina McBain, of 175, Crown St., Aberdeen.

Ballogie was torpedoed by UC-47 at 4.10 p.m on 09 Nov 1917. The torpedo struck on the port beam abreast the engine room causing the ship to break in half and sink instantaneously. Crew of 19, 13 lives lost including master.

Thanks Ann. From the marriage of Donald McBain and Williamina McBain in Aberdeen in March 1897 her normal residence is given as Greenhill, Deskford. She is also recorded on stone D102. I haven't yet worked out how closely they are related (if indeed they are). Her spouse's details are shown as Captain Donald McBain.

I can't find anything to explain the Keith connection though on Williamina McBain's death certificate (albeit in 1958), her normal residence is Keith.

On the marriage certificate his occupation looks to be Shipmaster so I'm not clear why he'd be down as Mate on CWGC or AB on the Portsoy memorial. I haven't yet found details of the crew of the Ballogie.

Just one question - being rather new to this - what does the abbreviation ADJ stand for?

Sailed from Glasgow to Quebec on the Athenia, arriving 30 Jul 1912 (aged 17) (along with his parents and some of his siblings)

1901 census resident in Square, Portsoy with parents George and Jessie Ann plus 7 siblings

AJ 10/06/1915 records award of DCM to his brother Sgt John Calder (1st Canadian Contingent).

Also commemorated Portsoy Cemetery (ANESFHS MI N30 (Portsoy Pt 2))

Second son of John and Ellen (Helen Duncan or Peterkin), of 3, Seafield St., Portsoy. John Duncan was a draper.

In the 1901 census the Duncan family (parents, 3 sons, 1 daughter, 1 female servant) are in Seafield Street.

From the Banffshire Journal 16 May 1916 (where there is also a family death notice): Private Duncan served apprenticeship as painter, partly with late Mr George Fairweather, South High Street, partly with Mr William Mcdonald, Church Street, after which he went to Canada where he was for five years. In August 1914 he enlisted in the 29th Vancouver Battalion, 2nd Contingent, and caome over with it to this country in June 1915. In August he had a run home on 3 days furlough and in the middle of December he proceeded with his regiment to France.

The BJ article also quotes a letter from the chaplain to Private Duncan's mother.
