St. Andrew’s East Church, 681 Alexandra Parade, Glasgow G31 3LN
OS Grid Ref: NS 618655
Construction began in 1843 when the minister and congregation of St Andrew’s came out (see Note on St Andrew’s (I)). At first they worshipped in the ballroom of the Black Bull Inn at the corner of Trongate and Virginia Street until a church had been built and was ready in 1844. This was in Hanover Square (corner of Cathedral Street and North Hanover Street.) In 1891 they united with Free St Paul’s and in 1898 the church was sold and a new church and halls were erected at what was then the ultimate extremity of Alexandra Parade - the halls in 1899 and the church five years later. This was St Andrew’s Free Church, and later St Andrew’s East United Free Church.
The church was built in 1904, architect, James Miller. The architect for the halls (1899) was James Salmon junior. The hall buildings were reworked and developed as a sanctuary and multi-purpose building and completed in 2002. The James Miller building was sold.
