LONGRIDGE, HAMILTON CROSS
Rank: Gunner
Service No: 929462
Date of Death:04/04/1942
Regiment/Service: Royal Artillery
Grave Reference Sec. 18. Grave 467.
Cemetery GLASGOW (ST. PETER'S) ROMAN CATHOLIC CEMETERY

Unfortunately, on the the stone in St. Peter's, his surname has been spelt LONGLIDGE.

I have an (almost unreadable) copy of his Death Registration which states:

Hamilton Cross Longridge, died 4th April 1942 aged 33.
He was married to E. Longridge (who was the informant of his death)
He died at Killearn Hospital, usual residence 21 Fraser Street, Glasgow. (Now in H.M. Forces)
Occupation: Coal Carrier (Gunner in R.A.)
Parents: George Paterson? Longridge, Coal Merchant (dec.) & Annie Longridge nee Wardie? (dec.)
Cause of Death: Tabes Mesenteria, Pulmonary Tuberculosis, Pleurisy, ……? Septicaemia.

I have contacted CWGC about the error on the stone and will send them a copy of the Death Registration (or confirmation of details) when it arrives from S.P.

Anne

Anne

CWGC should not have a problem replacing this headstone as their own records should confirm the error.

Well done in spotting it.

Well, I thought that would be the case - quite simple, but that's not how it's turned out. Confused

I sent an e-mail well over a month or so ago telling them of the error on the stone and informing them I had a photos if it was necessary. They replied asking for copies which I sent, then today, I was asked if I had any documentary evidence.

Me being nosey, downloaded his DC.

Their records ARE correct (in the database) it's the spelling on the stone which is wrong. They don't have any personal details for him, so hopefully his age, wife & parents will be added in due course.

Good work Anne,

I suppose they're just wanting as much evidence as possible to make sure it's the same man you are both on about?

Derek.

I doubt if there are too many Hamilton Cross Longridges from Glasgow who happened to die on the same date and was in the R.A., but as a Death Registration doesn't seem to be adequate .......

His Birth Registration states:
Born 14th June 1908 at 32 Fraser Street, Glasgow
Youngest (by 10 minutes) twin son of George Longridge, Carter and Annie Longridge (nee Ward)
Parents married at Glasgow, 31st December 1894.

Anne

Surely that's enough now ........ Laughing

This has now been done.
