This thread really fuelled my interest - a 15 year old boy who "Gave his life for his country".
I did a little digging and found the following birth index entry:
Births Jun 1899
Faed James Ronald H Hampstead 1a 655
His father, James Faed Jnr., was a celebrated artist and came from a family well known in this field;
Here is a link to some fascinating info. on James Faed Jnr.

Here is a link to some info. on his grandfather - James Faed
http://www.archiveshub.ac.uk/news/04080602.html
James RH Faed's mother was Eleanor Faed m.s. Herdman.
James RH Herdman was living with his maternal grandparents at the time of the 1901 Scottish Census.
James RH Herdmans, grandfather - John Herdman - was a flour mill owner and lived in a 23 roomed house named Hazelbank, Corstorphine Road, Haymarket, Edinburgh. They had 6 domestic servants.

The newspaper photo was a great addition to see. |

I have e-mailed Colin Faed who maintains the family website drawing his attention to this thread.
I have asked, if he thinks appropriate, to add some comment to the thread.

I never cease to be amazed at what information can result from posting a memorial. It helps you realise these were real people and real lives. |

I know exactly what you mean spoons. That is another facet of this site. Turning these people, however briefly, into 'remembered' lives.
I hope I'm not over-egging the thread but here is an excellent wee piece of resource on the Faeds

Thank you Mark for your email,
Whilst on the way to a family re-union in Kirkcudbright in August 2000 I spent a day in Edinburgh and on a visit to the Castle, I visited the war memorial to see the record of Ronald Faed's death in action. Despite the fact he died over 40 years before I was born, and I already knew what had happened to him, I felt quite emotional to see the record, It somehow bought it home to me in a way that simply being told about it by my Father never had.
Ronald was my Great-Uncle's son, (my second cousin?).
My Grandfather had and often used cameras, so I have family photos going back to 1898. One dated 1901 has been titled by my late Father "Ronald Faed, lost in HMS Goliath 1915" Also there is a photo which seems to be dated 1921 and titled "War Memorial Glenluce" I can only assume this lists Ronald on it.
Hopefully I'll manage to post the photos, if not, here's the urls

Colin,
Welcome to the Forum.
It's great to hear from a family with direct links to what we've posted.
It makes it all worthwhile indeed. _________________

Colin,
Thanks for taking the time & trouble to post. I know that everyone here will be most appreciative of the info.
I was especially stunned at 'wee' James Faed in his pram - with mum I presume.
Hard to think that, an undoubtedly promising life, was taken away not too long after.
I think most of the like-minded folk on this forum get a 'sense' of this - because thats why we do it.
Hopefully Glenluce will be posted soon and I'll be looking out for the name of James Ronald Herdman Faed - NOT FORGOTTEN.
regards,
Mark |

Glenluce is certainly on my list to 'collect' - I need to take a full day to get that far west and collect several, so the best I can say is sometime in the next 2 months.

Paul,
I knew we could count on you. You're doing a great job - and time is no issue. I know what it's like - it took me 7 hours to get up into and around the Rannoch area last week. I thought I may have got all the Atholl Kirks in as well - but no chance.
cheers,
Mark |

I have added the Glenluce memorial to the site. No sign of Ronald Faed though. _________________ www.sonsofgalloway.org.uk
