Govan New Parish Church, Govan Cross, Glasgow G51 2YN

OS Grid Ref: NS 560649

The oldest surviving building at the Cross is New Govan Church (originally St Mary’s) dating from 1873. Govan New Church began on 14th April 1982 consequent on the union of Govan Trinity with St. Mary’s Fairfield. Other churches which joined with New Govan were St. Kiaran’s and Dean Park.

New Govan Church has through unions a connection with 7 congregations. Is there indication which congregation the memorials came from?

The congregations were (in 1918)

St Mary's UF Church (the present building)
Fairfield UF,
St Columba's UF,
Copeland Rd UF,
Summerton UF,
Dean Park C of S, and
St Kiarans C of S.

The 129 BB was based in Summerton UF so I think it is safe to assume the first two came from there.

Shieldhall

That is great information, many thanks for this update. It may be possible to identify some of them from articles in contemporary newspapers of unveilings which often lists the names, or number of names and a description. Unfortunately the description might not be much use if it is a brass plate on wood.

Dean Park Church is identified and I think you are right that the first two came from the first church so that leaves two memorials and five churches.

The three churches without a memorial may have created rolls of honour that are not on display.

Kind regards

Adam

We'll shortly split this thread into separate threads for each memorial. We have at least two of them identified, and I'm hopeful we can identify the rest - as Adam says contemporary newspapers might provide information of descriptions or the number of men on a particular memorial.
