Not listed on UKNIWM (!)

Located in the entrance to the City Chambers on George Square, immediately behind the main war memorial (cenotaph).

OS Map Ref NS593654

Unfortunately the cabinet was locked with the books closed which kind of defeats the purpose. The lass on reception stated that there were no memorials inside the building until I found this and two others.

Details and photos sent to UKNIWM 1 Mar 2008

Incidentally, the plaque just visible in part at the top of the second and fourth photos is not a war memorial but is about the alliance of a ship (HMS Duke of York) to the City of Glasgow.

Tom,

Have you downloaded the City of Glasgow Roll of Honour to see if he is listed there?

You can download it from here:

Hello David,

I'm very suspicious of a website that wants to gather email addresses before allowing the download of a free document.

For that reason, I have not downloaded the file.

Kindest Regards,
Tom Lang.

Why not make up an email address solely for the purpose of receiving this info? That way, if you start getting SPAM, you can add the address to your blocked list and forget about - unless you wish to challenge the sender on the grounds the address could only have come from one source.

That may appear to be a good idea, but they verify the email address before allowing the login.

Kindest Regards,
Tom Lang.

There is one entry in the City of Glasgow Roll of Honour which states:

REDMOND A. Private HLI, address listed as 39 Tynefield Street.

Is this the information that is required?

Of course, who wouldn't? All you have to do is remember the email address you 'invented' and check it on a regualr basis.

Better still, why not purchase a domain name and get yourself access to everything@yourchosendomainname.XXX ? That way you have absolute control over the entire business.

Tom,

The website in question is a "print on demand" website, and many of the publications and downloads have a cost attached to them. Like any other similar commercial site (such as Amazon, etc) they require an email address in order to process the transaction.

The email address is not for this free download as such, more to register in oder to make any potential purchase. The download of this document, even though it is free, counts as a purchase from the site.

As the author of the document, and the person who uploaded it to the site, I can vouch for the website.

They do send out emails (usually offering a discount code on purchase) but you can select to receive no emails from them.

This may be the correct person. Details taken from City of Glasgow Roll of Honour.

Bourke, John Bugler....H.L.I.... address given as 3 Claythorn Street, Glasgow.

Hope this is who you are looking for once again.

Thanks mhomac, it looks pretty certain.

His paternal grandfather was a musician and his father was a scenic artist so if he became a bugler it would seem a logical conclusion.

In the 1911 census he was living with his father and family at his paternal grandmother's at 3 Claythorn St, Glasgow, and that is probably his Next of Kin address when he signed up.

Thanks once again for looking this up.
