My Grandfather, Robert Charles Swanson, served in WW1, in the Gordon Highlanders. He fell in France, in 1915, when my father was three years old. When I visited Scotland, some decades ago, I visited the Buckie War Memorial, where my grandfather's name appeared on the Roll of Honour. It may well be that two of my father's uncles, James and Alexander Simpson, of Sandend, are also listed, but I wasn't aware of this at the time. I know so little of the Scot's side of the family and would love to hear from anyone who may be able to point me in the right direction to find out more about the role of my family members in the Great War. Can anyone assist, please? I'd be most grateful.

I'm very grateful for the information and advice, you and Kenneth have kindly given me, Anne. I've visited the site you suggested and have managed to glean some very important information to assist me in my family search. I'm hoping to gather enough facts to warrant another trip to your beautiful country. Many thanks Kenneth and Anne.

Very Happy Hello Anne,

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. I have now, taken membership with this Family History Society and I'm waiting for my account to be activated. I think this may well prove to be a valuable site. Especially, as I believe I may be able to buy copies of family documents, at a very reasonable cost. My sister has just returned from a holiday in Banff and she met a gentleman, amateur researcher who knew of my grandfather, Robert Swanson and produced a newspaper cutting, depicting him, together with a photograph of him in his Army uniform. I can't tell you how delighted we are with this chance encounter. Very Happy

I also visited an American site, called Roots Web and I have been able to find details of my two great uncles, Alexander and James Simpson, who died in WW1. I can't believe how much information they store, to include my Simpson family. All I had, was three names. I'm very hopeful of finding out more about my uncles Army & RN records. So exciting. Thank you so much, Anne. Your advice and Kenneth's has been invaluable.

Another remarkable coincidence Anne. My sister also met an Alison Smith, who is a member of Portsoy Heritage and I shall be emailing her, to seek any further information she may have. Very Happy

Myra - if you are saying that one of the Simpson brothers was in the Navy, you should be able to find his service record at
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/royal-naval-seamen.htm

Good luck with your searches.

Thanks once more for the link Kenneth. I'll certainly give it a try. Although R. Swanson shows on the Cluny Square memorial, my sister found the names of our great uncles, J & A Simpson on another, hexagonal memorial nearby. This was how we discovered one was in the RN.
