I hope this is not too far off-topic for the forum.

No Scottish connection here I am afraid, but it is the time of year we think of our relatives lost in war.

All of my father's family are deceased or completely out of touch.

I already know that a great uncle Charles Goodwin was killed in France on 24th April 1918 in the world's first tank versus tank battle.

I now suspect that his brother Joseph Goodwin (born about 1892) might have been killed in WW1. What I know is that he was born and lived in Spa Hill, Thornton Heath, Surrey. Confusingly this is sometimes referred to as Norwood or Croydon. He is not listed on the Croydon Roll of Honour (but neither is his brother Charles). I suspect that the local WW1 memorial was destroyed by the Blitz in WW2 and there is no record I can find of it.

My suspicion is that he might be the same person as AM2 Joseph Goodwin RFC who died on 12 Nov 1915 at Amesbury. I will send for the death cert shortly (I have the details for this).

It's a longshot but my main reason for suspecting it was him (apart from the age agreeing) is that he was buried in Mitcham Road cemetery which is where other members of my family (including my father) are buried.

Anyone fancy a challenge of helping me connect the dots? Or can you think of another source?

Paul

The National Roll of Honour covered London in three or four volumes. It's a long shot but it may be worth a try?

Ancestry throws up only 3 families with siblings Joseph and Charles of the right age group. The others - South Kirkby, Yorkshire and Worthing, Sussex. I suspect you're thinking is correct and hopefully the death cert will confirm.

Thanks all for your interest, unfortunately the National Roll for London did not cover out as far as Thornton Heath or Norwood. It can be amazingly difficult to try and trace your miltary ancestors when the war memorials in the area were destroyed in the blitz with no surviving record, no family members survive and no service record or anything equivalent to SNWM. Nothing useful on CWGC or SDGW to link him to my family, nor in Airmen Died in the great war. Currently waiting on the death cert arriving which would be about my last hope.

Thanks for those who showed an interest. The death certificate arrived today and showed that he was indeed my great uncle. A mechanic in the Royal Flying Corps who died of meningitis. Sadly not listed on any surviving war memorial as far as I have been able to find out.
