ARGYLL & SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS
Pte. William W. Watkinson

Although listed under his step fathers surname of Watkinson on the memorial, he did not go by that surname in the army.

(Glasgow Herald 29th March 1915)
"Pensioner recruiter Colour-Sergeant Joseph Watkinson, 15 Govan Drive, Alexandria, on Saturday received word that his stepson, Bandsman William Wilson (aged 22), of the 2nd Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, had been killed on August 25 at the battle of Inchy. He was first posted as missing, but a letter from Lance-Corporal D. McLellan of the same regiment, who is a prisoner in Germany, stated Wilson was killed by McLellan's side while taking part in this fight."

(Glasgow Herald 31st March 1915)
"Bandsman William Wilson (261), 2nd Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, has been killed. He was first posted as missing by the War Office, but his step father, Pensioner Recruiter Colour-Sergeant Joseph Watkinson, 15 Govan Drive, Alexandria, has now received word he was skilled as a far back as August 26 last at the Battle of Inchy. He was 22 years of age, and was a native of Irvine. He joined the Argyll's as a band boy when he was 14 years of age."

Unfortunately absent from the memorial probably due to emigration, he was born at and lived in Alexandria for 18 of his 20 years.

AEGYLL & SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS
Pte. Harry C. Robertson

It appears he was one of those whose burial place was known at the time of his death but later lost. Possibly by later fighting on the site or poor record keeping?

(Glasgow Herald 13th April)
"Information was received at Alexandria yesterday that Private Harry Robertson of the Dunbartonshire Territorials, the 1st 9th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, eldest son of Mrs Agnes Robertson, 23 Susannah Street, Alexandria, had been killed at the front. He was 22 years of age, and joined the territorials at the outbreak of the war. He was a native of Kilmarnock, and took an active interest in the temperance cause in the Vale of Leven."

(Glasgow Herald 15th April 1915)
"Mrs Agnes Robertson, 23 Susannah Street, Alexandria, has received the following letter from Captain J.C. MacBain, commanding B Company of the 1/9th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, regarding the death of her son, Private Harry Robertson, who has been killed in action. The letter states that-"It is with much sorrow that I have to tell you of the death of your son, Private Harry C. Robertson, who was killed in action on the morning of April 5 last. We buried him beside the brave men who died with him, and have set up a small cross to mark his grave. By the death of your son we have lost a loyal comrade and the battalion an efficient and ever ready soldier. The platoon commander had reported so favourably on him that he had been noted for promotion" He was 22 years of age and was a native of Kilmarnock."

Pte. James Cunningham

He is not included on the CWGC or SNWM databases. There is now unfortunately no documents that exist which can make a case for his inclusion.
It is good however he is remembered by the community and listed on the memorial.

(Glasgow Herald 21st April 1915)
"Mr & Mrs James Cunningham, 264 Main Street, Bonhill, have been informed that their eldest surviving son, Private James Cunningham, of E (Jamestown and Bonhill) Company of the 1/9th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, has died in the infirmary. He left with his regiment at the outbreak of war, but took ill while training at Bedford. He was 24 years of age, and had been fully three years in the Territorials. He was employed in the Levenbank Works, Jamestown, prior to his leaving with the others."

From his death certificate: he died April sixteenth at Glasgow Infirmary of cancer of the bowel aged 24.
His parents being James Cunningham, a bleachfield labourer, and Jane Farrell of 268 Main Street, Bonhill.

Derek.
