Kilconquhar - Fife
UKNIWM Ref No. 3020
The Kilconquhar First World War memorial is a rustic grey granit cross and cairn type pedestal, standing on two low freestone steps. A downturned sword is carved in shallow relief on the upper face, with a cross carved on the lower face of the cross shaft. The commemoration and names of the dead are listed in lead lettering on the face of the pedestal.
The monument stands outside the north boundary of the kirk and cemetery adjoining the main road.
A white marble tablet has been set onto the lower steps bearing the inscription:
THIS TABLET IS ERECTED

The Courier and Advertiser for Tuesday 16 Feb 2010 : Craigie section :
page 12 : Private Remembered
Alan Provan, from Elie , has been in touch hoping that Craigie readers might be able to help him.
He says , "Private Alex Bisset , 2nd /7th Black Watch ( Royal Highlanders ) is remembered on the Kilconquhar War Memorial . On the memorial it says Pte A Bisset , BWNR . There is also a CWGC stone for him in the churchyard.
"I wonder if any of your readers could tell me what the BWNR stands for ?"
replies to email : craigie@thecourier.co.uk
I have checked the CWGW index and see that Bisset Alex Pte Black Watch ( Royal Highlanders ) 2nd /7th Bn , service number 2233
transferred to Royal Defence Corps ( 27937 )
died 15 September 1919 aged 57 years the husband of Elzabeth Mabon Bisset, of West End, Kilconquhar , Fife
grave : North West of Churh Kilconquhar Parish Church .
( I presume his CWGC headstone will have the Royal Defence Corps badge on it instead of his Mother regiment - Black Watch as he had transferred to the RDC )
-----
He is not listed on the Scottish National War Memorial , Edinburgh Castle . - Checked both spellings of Bisset and Bissett for a roll of honour casualty

Pat
We've actually discussed Private Bissett before. See here:
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=1075
It could it be Black Watch, National Reserve since the National Reserve became the Royal Defence Corps in 1916 .
Regards
Adam |

The Courier & Advertiser "Craigie " column for 27 Oct 2010 has this write up that I thought would interest everyone ..
KILCONQUHAR QUERY :
Elie Reader Alan Provan has contacted me to say " to advance my research on the names remembered on KILCONQUHAR War Memorial , I hope that the readers of your column might be able to assist me with any information on Pte A Farmer of the Black Watch.
"I have used up all the recognised avenues of research and have drawn a complete blank. I can find no record of him at all , not even in Kilconquhar Parish churchyard.
"I have two questions that your readers might help me with. Is there anywhere else that someone who lived in Kilconquhar Parish might be buried ? Are there any descendants of Pte Farmer who would be kind enough to give me information about him and any idea of why he is remembered on the Kilconquhar War Memorial ?
