One of the last acts of the Leith Town Council before it was absorbed into the City of Edinburgh in 1920 was to approve the plans to combine the extension of Leith Hospital (by creating a new children's wing) with Leith's War Memorial.

Leithers had been fundraising for many years to extend the hospital but the combining of the War Memorial fund with the hospital fund was an inspired act. Instead of the £30,000 wanted £60,000 was raised.

Along with the creation of the Hospital / War Memorial rolls of honour to the 2205 Leither's who died in the Great War were also commissioned.

These were placed in the Hospital in 1927 and remained there on public display in 1948.

They were then packed away in the bottom of a tea chest in the Hospital basement and forgotten about.

In the early 1990s boxes and papers from several redundant Edinburgh hospitals were given to the Lothian Health Services Archive to look through for anything of interest.

In one tea chest under old medical equipment and a tatty and incomplete set of the works of Charles Dickens were the 5 volumes of the Leith RoH in very poor condition. They could easily have been thrown away at any time over the previous forty years!

The LHSA have repaired them and are now the custodians of these valuable rolls.

The photographs below were taken in Leith Library but the LHSA have taken elecrtronic copies of the roll which are available to view by appointment.

See http://www.lhsa.lib.ed.ac.uk/contact/acc_serv.html for LHSA contact details

The rolls on display

An example of a page. The names are listed in alphabetical order. Each page has a regimental badge at the top.

I couldn't get a clearer picture through the glass cabinet.

Not all details are the same for each entry but where known the name, number, unit, date of death, cause of death and home address are provided

The list of those decorated including Leith's two VCs

That is first class - I'm really pleased that someone/some organisation choose to save the rolls rather than turn a blind eye.
