"Information has been received that Angus McPhee, son of John McPhee, residing at the Docks, Grangemouth, has been killed in action near Neuve Chapelle. The information was conveyed in a letter received from a Lieutenant in the Princess Patricia's Highland Light Infantry. McPhee was struck on the head by part of a shrapnel shell, death being instantaneous. He served four years in India, and was in Canada at the outbreak of hostilities and returned with the Canadian troops to France. He was 29 years of age and unmarried."

According to The Scotsman for the 24th of September 1923 the memorial was unveiled by General Sir Ian Hamilton on Saturday 22nd September 1923 and was designed by Sir John Burnett and stands 27 foot hight.
Alexander Proudfoot was the sculptor responsible for casting the Lion and Eagle.
