Just noticed that Walter Knox, L-Cpl., Black Watch, is commemorated here. He was born at Stanley, worked as a gardner at Ballathie House and is commemorated on the Kinclaven & Caputh war memorials in Perthshire. I have no idea what his connection is here!

RANK AND FILE KILLED
GALASHIELS

Lance-Corporal Walter Knox, of the 1/6th Black Watch, son of Mrs Knox, 3 Croft Street, is reported killed in France. Lance-Corporal Knox, who was 28 years of age, was a son of the late Mr Robert Knox, saddler, Jedburgh, and before he enlisted was a gardener with Sir Stuart Coates, Stanley. In a letter received by Mrs Knox from Captain W. Alexander, he says that Lance-Corporal Knox was out trench digging when he was shot through the throat by a sniper.
