Hi

This Great War memorial bench is now located outside the Anne Ferguson Building at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. I suspect it was once located at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Not sure who it is in memory of. Anybody else know?
Regards
LIT

Are the initials on the left commemorating someone who lived from 1870 to 1939 and worked at the Royal Infirmary between 1924 and 1935?

If that is the case perhaps they served as an M.O. In the Royal Scots T.F. In those theatres?

Hi Adam

That's what I thought too. I've come across one possibilty in the University of Edinburgh Roll of Honour 1914-1919:

Thom, George St Clair.
Dollar Academy; First XV. M.B., C.M. 1893. Rugby "Blue." R.A.M.C. 1894; Lieut-Col. March 1915; Colonel Dec. 1917. South African Campaign, 1900-2; Gallipoli 1915; France 1916-18; North Russia 1919. C.M.G. 1916; C.B. June 1918; C.B.E. Jan 1920.

In addition to the above I found an obituary and photo in The Scotsman, 08/04/1935, relating to this man whose full name and title was Colonel George David St Clair Thom, C.B, C.M.G., C.B.E., M.B., C.M.

He was Superintendent of the Edinburgh Royal Infimary from 1924 until 1935. The obituary gives details of a long military service too that includes all the theatres of war mentioned on the bench.

See also: http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/30655/pages/5102/page.pdf

He shows up in the 1891 census in Dollar as a 21 year old student of medicine, born Madras, India.

He died at home in Meadow Walk House of Chronic Myocarditis and Inflenzal Pleurisy. Meadow Walk House was within the grounds of the Royal Infirmary, about where Sainsbury's supermarket stands now.

Outstanding detective work from abreviated members LIT and ADP.

I have now amended the title of this thread and moved it to the individuals section.

Kind regards
