Recently found the following article in the local press. I photographed the Parish Great War Memorial outside the church in 2007 but there was no access to church at this time. I later contacted a church member who assured there were no memorials inside the church. This vase may still exist somewhere, perhaps in storage, and further enquiry will have to be made;

PERTHSHIRE ADVERTISER 04.06.1921
GLENCARSE
DEDICATING WAR MEMORIAL VASE

Amongst the many war memorials which have been raised to the memory of the men who gave their lives for their country that to be dedicated in St. Madoes Parish Church on Sunday has its own especial charm. The money for it was collected by an ex-service man from his comrades-in-arms, and the memorial is thus a tribute from the men who served and returned to their fellow soldiers who fell. No memorial can have such a peculiar charm nor would any other tribute have been so much appreciated by those whom we all delight to honour. The memorial takes the form of a vase for the Communion Table and bears the names of five men connected with the congregation during the years of war. The inscription runs:- “Presented in memory of their fallen comrades to St. Madoes Parish Church by the members who served in the Great War, 1914-1919. William M’Cann, Charles M’Cabe, Frank Fairweather, John A. Maxwell, Herbert W. Leitham”. The vase is to be dedicated at the morning service on Sunday by the Rev. F. W. Langlands, B.D., minister of Eastwood, Glasgow.

It may well still exist but because it isn't a plaque on the wall the member of the church may not have realised the significance.

Thanks

Absolutely, and reinforces my own motto of getting in and checking personally.

Also have an entry relating to St. Madoes Church RoH from Perthshire Advertiser: 12.08.1920. Do not have this copied or photographed but pretty sure there were no names mentioned. Pity, that might have given more of a clue for the mysterious John Binn casualty.

From David's e-mail;

"I contacted the Minister and he very kindly let me see it and take a couple of photos, which are attached. Apparently the vase was found in a cupboard and was really tarnished. One of the parishioners took the time to clean it, and it is now in place on the Communion Table in the church".
