Kilmartin - Argyll & Bute, Mid Argyll
UKNIM Ref no. 5977

The Kilmartin First World War Memorial takes the form of an archway constructed of grey granite blocks with the keystone crowned by a small cross built over the existing gateway into the kirk.
There are 18 men listed on the archway. According to the Statistical Account of Scotland the population of Kilmartin Parish has steadily declined through the 20th century, 663 in 1901, 582 in 1911, 557 in 1921, 455 in 1931 and 460 in 1951.
(There is also a collection of very fine carved tombstones featuring carved reliefs of warriors in the kirkyard).
The commemoration on the keystone reads:
THEY DIED
THAT WE
MIGHT
LIVE
1914 1919
(The right hand pillar has the date 1815 carved near the top).
The memorial was erected by Glasgow monumental sculptors Messrs. Scott Rae, the daybook entry reads:
'Order No. 5389, Kilmartin, Grey archway, Erected May 1920, Daybook 137'.
