This man doesn't appear to be on the memorial and is certainly not in the roll of honour. He is not on SNWM.

I find it interesting he is noted as being buried in a specific cemetery, but commemorated upon a memorial also. Perhaps the location within the cemetery was lost?

From the CWGC website

The HAIDAR PASHA MEMORIAL stands within the war graves plot of Haidar Pasha Cemetery and commemorates more than 30 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War who died fighting in South Russia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, and in post Armistice operations in Russia and Transcaucasia, whose graves are not known. An Addenda panel was later added to commemorate over 170 Commonwealth casualties who are buried in cemeteries in South Russia and Transcaucasia* whose graves can longer be maintained. *Baku British Military Cemetery; Batoum British Cemetery; Batoum Russian CatholicCemetery; Erivan Armenian Cemetery; Krasnodar Officers' Cemetery; Novorossisk (Chaikovski) Old Cemetery; Novorossisk New Cemetery; Odessa British Cemetery; Rostov (Bratski) Cemetery; Sevastopol British Cemetery; Sevastopol Russian Cemetery; Shusha Armenian Cemetery; Tiflis British Cemetery; Vladikavkas Hospital Cemetery; Yalta Russian Cemetery.

I know they have also done this in India and Poland. The old original registers show the burials in the cemeteries.

On November 8 Her Majesty's Ambassador to Georgia, His Excellency Denis Keefe, laid a wreath at the site of the British War Cemetery in Tbilisi during a short service. There were originally 107 Commonwealth war graves from the First World War in Georgia, of which sixty-six were in the Batumi British Military Cemetery and 39 in Tbilisi. Following the First World War the burial sites became inaccessible and the decision was taken to commemorate the casualties on the Haidar Pasha Memorial, Istanbul.

In 1996 the change in the political situation enabled the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to re-enter Georgia. It did not prove possible to locate graves but there was evidence that some of the burial areas had been maintained by the local population. To acknowledge the local interest in 2000 the Commission erected a small commemorative plaque in what was known to be the vicinity of Tbilisi British Cemetery.

The casualties buried in Georgia include members of the British Army, the Royal Navy and the Indian Army who died during the allied intervention against Bolsheviks during the period 1918 to 1920.

No disrespect to Selkirk but £3500 for the memorial seems quite extravagant given that the likes of Maxwelltown was less than £1000.
The cost is an eye opener.

It would be worth contrasting the costs for Selkirk with somewhere like Kelso which has a similar style of memorial.

(Glasgow Herald 12th March 1915)
"Intelligence reaches Selkirk yesterday that Private James French Milligan, 1st Battalion Cameron Highlanders, had been killed in action. The news was sent to the Rev. George Lawson, minister of Selkirk, by a companion of Private Milligan, who stated that his chum had been shot through the head, and that he had died without regaining consciousness. Private Milligan, who was the son of Mr James Milligan, foreman, coal depot, Selkirk Co-operative Society, residing at Bridge Street, joined the Highlanders as a recruit in September last, and was drafted to the front in January. He was a prominent member of Selkirk Association Football Club, and played several seasons at half back. Private Milligan was, however, better known as a cricketer, and was one of the most promising all-round players in the first eleven of the Selkirk club. In local sporting circles he was extremely popular. Prior to enlisting he was employed in one of the Selkirk factories, and was about 23 years of age."

SNWM roll: THE HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY

MARTIN SCREEN was born on 1st August, 1879, at 17 Dunsdalehaugh, Selkirk, Selkirkshire, Scotland.
His parents were John Screen, a woolen factory worker, and Isabella Lamb or Screen.

His parents were married on 31st December, 1866, at Selkirk, Selkirkshire.
His paternal grandparents were Malachi Screen, a labourer, and Mary Mulholland or Screen.
His maternal grandparents were Walter Lamb, a gardener, and Ann Douglas or Lamb.

In the 1881 census, Martin Screen then age 1, was living with his family at 17 Dunsdalehaugh, Selkirk.
In the 1891 census, Martin Screen then age 12, was living with his family at 12 A Dunsdalehaugh, Selkirk.
In the 1901 census, Martin Screen then age 21, was living with his family at 12 Dunsdalehaugh, Selkirk.

On 19th April, 1907, George Martin Screen, age 27, and Sarah Elizabeth Dunn Mathieson, age 28, were married at The Manse, Selkirk.

A daughter Margaret Oliver Screen was born on 30th March, 1908, at 5 Dunsdalehaugh, Selkirk.
Four (4) children named Screen were born in Selkirk between 1907 (marriage) and 1917 (death).
Two (2) are not available online.
Isabella Lamb Screen, born in 1912, is a good candidate as ‘Isabella Lamb’ is George’s mother’s name.
The fourth (4th) named Mary Scott Screen is not a child of George and Sarah Screen.

In the 1911 census for Selkirk, George Screen, now age 31, his wife Sarah and daughter Margaret O., are living at 37 Back Row, Selkirk.

MARTIN SCREEN had several uncles and cousins who were all named MARTIN SCREEN.
On his marriage record in 1907 he is shown using the name GEORGE MARTIN SCREEN.
On his daughter's birth record in 1908 he is shown using the name GEORGE MARTIN SCREEN.
On the 1911 census he is shown using the name GEORGE SCREEN.
His MIC and the 'Service Returns' (Army Form W 3231) show his name as GEORGE SCREEN.
There is no known relative of his who was named George, so maybe he chose that to distinguish himself from all those other relatives known as Martin.

George Screen, Robert Lang (my grandfather), and 10 others died on 24th April, 1917, at Villers-Plouich, France.

George Screen was 37 years and 8 months old on 24th April, 1917.

The following link is to a website dedicated to the 14th Battalion HLI and the specific page for George Screen:
