Bonhill - Dumbarton District

The Bonhill war memorial which I think also covers the Alexandria and Balloch communities. It stands in the park on Balloch Road, almost opposite the old Albion car works which is now a retail centre.

Unfortunately the panels don't photograph very well so I'll print them below

I think this memorial should be called 'Bonhill Parish' as this is part of the main inscription on the memorial. It lies in Christie Park, Alexandria opposite the Loch Lomond Outlets, formerly the Albion Motor Car Works (and was also a torpedo factory after being a car factory).

Renton, Alexandria, and part of Balloch lie to the west of the river Leven. Bonhill, Jamiestown and part of Balloch lie to the east of the river. The villages have now grown together so that they form a single connurbation.

Alex

As the parish memorial does this mean this memorial covers all the villages of Renton Alexandria, Balloch, Bonhill and Jamiestown?

We currently use a topic title policy of using the parish and the town they are located in if that is different from the parish name. This makes it easier for people to search for a memorial.
Many people from outside Dunbartonshire searching the forum looking for a memorial in Alexandria might not know that Bonhill is part of Alexandria or is the name of the parish. If we exclude that from the topic title people might not be aware that we have the Alexandria memorial.

In the memorial list it is listed as Alexandria & District.

Regards

Adam

Excellent work transcribing the names of those on the memorial opposite the former Argyll works (not the Albion factory) in Alexandria in the Parish of Bonhill. Many of the names would be the friends and colleagues of my late grandfather who served part of his apprenticeship at the Argyll works. What a price the Vale paid!

From tomorrow's Lennox Herald. (The article is dated 28th January 2011)

http://www.lennoxherald.co.uk/dunbartonshire-news/dunbartonshire-news/dumbarton-news/2011/01/28/christie-park-war-memorial-restoration-to-be-ready-by-october-114557-28052918/

Christie Park war memorial restoration to be ready by October

Jan 28 2011 by Lorraine Waddell, Lennox Herald (main ed)

VALE veterans should have a new war memorial in time for this year’s Remembrance Day service.

The cenotaph at Christie Park, which is the biggest of its kind in West Dunbartonshire, is scheduled to be restored by mid-October.

The work will overhaul the dilapidated monument which has been subjected to vandalism and weather damage.

Plans include installing lights and a CCTV system, as well as erecting a new fence and gate.

And the cenotaph will also be repointed, cleaned, and new stone steps will be built around it.

The proposals have been drawn up by West Dunbartonshire Council in co-ordination with external agencies.

The work, which is set to go out to tender in the coming weeks, will cost around £120,000 in total.

A West Dunbartonshire Council spokeswoman said: “Design drawings have been produced for the restoration of the war memorial in consultation with Historic Scotland.

“Officers from the council’s architectural services section are currently developing tender documents for the scope of works.

“It is anticipated that work will start at the beginning of June 2011, with a completion date of mid-October 2011.

“Funding for this project will come from Entrust external funding.”

The Vale of Leven Remembrance Day Association has been given a copy of the masterplan and members have been asked to provide any feedback on the plans.

A report into the condition of the cenotaph, which is made from sandstone, describes the monument as being in relatively good condition but having suffered from “vandalism and weathering.”

The report reads: “The vandalism requires regular cleaning of the structure and all of this has caused loss of mortar from stone joints and loss of lettering on the slate panels.”

The memorial, which currently stands within Christie Park, was formerly known as the Bonhill war memorial and was officially unveiled in 1921. The B listed monument was designed by artist Sir David Young Cameron.

It includes the names of those from the Bonhill parish who lost their lives in both the first and second world wars.

Annually, veterans – along with local dignitaries – gather at the memorial to pay tribute to soldiers who have fallen.

If it was formerly known as the Parish of Bonhill War Memorial what is known as today? Is it the Vale of Leven War Memorial?

Thanks

It would be nice to get updated photos of this memorial, and of the main inscription.

I agree. The article reproduced above states work will be completed in time for Remembrance Day, so I will make a trip after that to get up to date photos.

GORDON HIGHLANDERS
Pte. Charles Miller

(Glasgow Herald 24th Dec 1914)
"Information has been received at Alexandria that Private Charles Miller of the Gordon Highlanders is missing. The news has been sent home to Alexandria by one of his companions at the front. Private Miller, who is a married man, is the son of Mr Miller, Victoria Street, Alexandria. He joined Lord Kitcheners army on the outbreak of the war, and having volunteer training he was dispatched to the front with the Gordons. No official intimation has been received from the War Office that he is missing, and his friends are hoping for the best. He was employed as a joiner in one of the Dumbarton shipbuilding yards before he joined Lord Kitcheners Army."
