This memorial sits in Cumnock New Cemetery which is opposite the Fire Station on Glaisnock Road leading south from the town. It is at Map Ref. NS 572193
The First World War names are on the surrounding brass panels, while the Second World War ones are on the low screen wall to the rear
Interestingly, on the back of this wall is a name from the Malaya Campaign.

Strangely for such a prominent memorial, it does not seem to be listed on UKNIWM.

"At the meeting of Cumnock Town Council on Monday night, before the commencement of the formal business, Provost Richmond said he felt compelled to make reference to the news which came that morning of the death of their townsman, Thomas Gilchrist, who was killed at the front whilst doing his duty as a soldier. For many years Gilchrist took a keen interest in the affairs of the burgh. They expressed their sympathy for his sorrowing wife and children. Private Gilchrist was a stretcher bearer in the 1st Battalion R.S.F."

Canadian attestation papers. He claims on his Canadian attestation paper to be born 14th of May 1891, but it was actually 14th May 1894 making him 21 at the time of his death.

"Lance Corporal Bertie Munn, of the 1st Canadian Contingent, has died of wounds. He was the eldest son of Mr Munn, Dumfries Arms Hotel, Cumnock, and settled in Ontario about three years ago. He was 22 years of age."

"Private Tom Kennan, of the 2nd battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers, was killed at the fight for Hill 60 on April 18. He served several years with the colours, and was in the campaign in India 1895-1896. He held a medal with three bars for the engagements he took part in. His term of service as well as his Reserve period were over, but on the outbreak of war he volunteered for his old regiment. He leaves a wife and three children."

William McCaa – age 32 – Staff Sergeant (143902) 527th Heavy Battery, Royal Field Artillery.
William was a Farrier Staff Sergeant (1019) in the Territorial Ayrshire Yeomanry. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in October 1915 where they fought as dismounted troops. Later he transferred to the RFA and served at Amara in Mesopotamia. He died of malaria at sea on board the Troopship “ Kinfauns Castle”.
Born 1885 at Old Cumnock, Ayrshire. Son of William and Elizabeth (Ritchie) McCaa of Garrallan, Old Cumnock, Ayrshire.
Husband of Thomasina (McGhie) McCaa of Burn Street, Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire who he married in August 1915 at Dalbeattie.
Died on Active Service on 11 January 1918 and named on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
Also named on the Dalbeattie War Memorial. _________________ Ken |

Named on the Maxwelltown Burgh & Troqueer Parish War Memorial in Dumfries as:
BLACK, JOHN M. L/C. R.S.F.
John Murray Black – age 25 – Private (12262) 6th/7th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John was a coal miner in Skares, Cumnock, Ayrshire when he enlisted. He landed with the 6th RSF at Boulogne in May 1915 and was wounded at Loos in September. He then served with the 1st RSF before rejoining his old battalion which had amalgamated with the 7th Battalion in May 1916. John died of his wounds in the 37th Field Ambulance.
Born 1892 in Closeburn, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Annie (Lind) Black of 1 Old Bridge Street, Maxwelltown. Husband of Agnes (Reid) Black who he married in 1911 in Troqueer.
Died of Wounds on 9 April 1917 and buried in Faubourg d'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.
Also named on the Maxwelltown United Free Church Memorial now Maxwelltown West Church. _________________ Ken |
