This memorial has rather a curious story. Initially the centre plaque was the entire memorial. The names of the First World War casualties were added at a later date, with the Second World War details coming later still.

First World War panels. You can see the difference in the metals of these panels, highlighting that the name panels were added later.

I think that this is the only memorial in Carluke to have the name DAVID FORREST, a WW2 fatality. He is named on the Kirkcudbright War Memorial as:
STAFF SGT. DAVID FORREST R.A.O.C.
David Forrest, B.LL. – age 30 – Staff Sergeant (7645955) Royal Army Ordnance Corps.
David lived in Victoria Park, Kirkcudbright. He was a solicitor with the Stewartry County Council and was in the Civil Defence Department before he joined the army in 1941. He had previously worked in the office of the Procurator Fiscal in Glasgow and with Lanarkshire County Council.
David was on board the troopship S.S. Ceramic, sailing from Liverpool to Australia when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-515.
Born 1912 in Carluke, Lanarkshire. Son of John and Agnes Forrest, of Whitehill Farm, Carluke, Lanarkshire.
Killed by enemy action/Lost at Sea on 7 December 1942 and named on the Brookwood 1939-1945 Memorial, Surrey.
Also named on the Kirkcudbright St. Cuthbert's Church memorial.
So far I have been unable to identify where David studied for his degree. _________________ Ken |
