Maybole - Kyle & Carrick District
The Maybole war memorial is a tall, rustic grey granite cenotaph with a series of two low steps of dressed stone, and three steps of rustic blocks forming the base of the monument. The bronze tablets bearing the names of the dead are set into the lower face, and a cross with reversed sword is carved in relief in the upper face. The memorial is located on the Golf Course overlooking the Public Baths.
Sorry but the pics of the tablets are poor. I will try to provide a transcription soon.

Bar to Distinguished Flying Cross.

Acting Squadron Leader Gilbert CAMPBELL, D.F.C.
(46638), R.A.F., 226 Sqn.
Squadron Leader Campbell has completed many
sorties against a variety of targets by day and
night. . In August, 1944, he was detailed for an
operation against a ferry at Duclair. Despite
heavy anti-aircraft fire the attack was pressed
home with good results. Shortly after the bombs
had fallen the aircraft was struck. It immediately
became almost uncontrollable and height was lost
rapidly. Petrol poured from the pierced tanks
and the starboard engine caught fire. The situation
seemed hopeless. Coolly and skilfully, however,
Squadron Leader Campbell effected a crash-
landing. As the aircraft touched down it burst
into flames. All the: crew, with the exception of
the top gunner had got clear. Without hesitation,
Squadron Leader Campbell entered the wreckage
in order to release his comrade. Unfortunately he
had succumbed. This brave pilot displayed conduct
in keeping with the best traditions of the
Royal Air Force.

At this stage of the war 226 Squadron flew North American Mitchell bombers.

Craig, James. R.S.F.

(Glasgow Herald 20th April)
"Much concern is felt among the friends of Private James Craig, of the 1st Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers, as to his fate. He has been missing since October 1. Private Craig is a native of Maybole, and before joining the Royal Scots Fusiliers seven years ago was employed as a top-cutter in Ladywell Boot and Shoe Factory, Maybole. He was stationed in Malta when the war broke out, and was early drafted to the front. He took part in all the engagements up till October 1, including the retreat from Mons, but since then nothing has been heard from him, either officially or otherwise, and it is feared that he has been killed."

Pretty sure I can see a McClymont, John - S.R. on the WW1 names memorial but he isn't in the transcription in the thread - should be the name between Thomas McClure and Hugh McCoid (both R.S.F.). Assuming I am correct:-

The Glasgow Herald, Monday, 28th. May, 1917.
"Deaths on Service.
McCLYMONT.- Previously reported missing on 20th July, 1916, now presumed to have been killed in action on that date, Private John McClymont, Scottish Rifles, aged 20 years, eldest son of Mrs. R. McClymont, 73 High Street, Maybole; sadly missed."

SDGW - Enlisted Glasgow.
Medal index ticket/Medal Award Rolls record previous service:- 5/6 Sco. Rif. Pte. 239.
Army register of soldier's backpay/War Gratuity records some monies to brother, Thomas C. but more to his mother, Annie.
John McClymont. Died on or since 20th. July, 1916. 1/5Bn. Scot. Rils. Pte. 201570/ 239.

1901 Census Ayrshire, Maybole, 10a, Whitehall Street, recorded (transcription):- John McClymont (4), Scholar, son, born Maybole; Richard McClymont (24), China Merchant, born Maybole; Annie McClymont (28 ), Wife, born Edinburgh; siblings, both born Maybole.
