Sir
I have only recently discovered that Pte George Buchan Syme of the Kings Regiment ( Liverpool) is my Uncle and my namesake..

I have seen photo,s of the war grave in Karachi cemetery and only just found out about the memorial in St Mary,s cathederal. I lived in Edinburgh 27 years and never knew about this. Could you furnish me with any further details of my uncle or point me in the direction of further.
information.

Thank you

George Syme.

Hi George
Getting information on your namesake is a bit of a problem. So much is not available due to time constraints - records are closed until certain dates. To find out what military records you can get and how go to http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/britisharmysoldierafter1913.htm

Some civil records are available at scotlandspeople.gov.uk
for example:
George Buchan Syme was born 1917 in Edinburgh.
He married Jessie Baxter (no surname) in 1942 in Edinburgh and
the "Minor Records - Service Returns" section contains some information on his death - probably due to illness.

As far as I can see the 1st Battalion The King's Liverpool Regiment were in Burma in 1944 as "Chindits" but the source I checked was a bit vague.

Hope this helps a bit.

ps He is listed on the Special Forces Roll of Honour under "Chindits 1944"
