The Nitshill war memorial is a grey granite cross decorated with traditional pictish carvings of warriors, battle and hunt scenes. The monument stands on Nitshill Road in South Nitshill, in front of the Railway Station.
(The last photograph shows how misleading colour re-production can be. This last picture captures more accurately the grey of the Creetown granite which the monument is carved from, the previous shots have the setting sun lighting the face of the stone and it actually looks more like a sandstone in these shots).
The monument was by Glasgow monumental sculptors Messrs. Scott Rae, their Daybook entry reads:
'Order No. 7131, Nitshill, Creetown Cross'.

These are Spoons photos from the Gatehouse of Fleet War Memorial. The carvings are almost identical and were spotted by Jim McGinlay and he requested the information panels were placed here as well.

CWGC ENTRY:
Name: MEIKLE, JOHN
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Serjeant
Regiment/Service: Seaforth Highlanders
Unit Text: 4th Bn.
Age: 19
Date of Death: 20/07/1918
Service No: 200854
Awards: V C, M M
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: VIII. C. 1.
Cemetery: MARFAUX BRITISH CEMETERY
Citation: An extract from "The London Gazette", dated 13th Sept., 1918, records the following:-"For most conspicuous bravery and initiative when his company, having been held up by machine-gun fire, he rushed single-handed a machine-gun nest. He emptied his revolver into the crews of the two guns and put the remainder out of action with a heavy stick. Then, standing up, he waved his comrades on. Very shortly afterward another hostile machine-gun checked progress, and threatened also the success of the company on the right. Most of his platoon having become casualties, Serjt. Meikle seized the rifle and bayonet of a fallen comrade, and again rushed forward against the gun crew, but was killed almost on the gun position. His bravery allowed two other men who followed him to put this gun out of action. This gallant non-commissioned officer's valour, devotion to duty, and utter disregard for his personal safety was an inspiring example to all."

The memorial to Sergeant Meikle which originally stood here was moved to Digwall due to vandalism and can be seen here:

You are right. These appear to be WW1 additions, not WW2 names. So this is a great war memorial only.

WW1 (addition)
Matthew Kirkwood

(Glasgow Herald 8th Feb 1915)
"Information has been received that Private Matthew Kirkwood , of the 1st Battlaion London Scottish, was killed in action on January 25. He was educated in ther High School and technical college, Glasgow, and was for several years a prominent figure in Rugby Football. A student of conspicuous ability, he was twice awarded the medal for brewing-chemistry in the city and guilds examinations, London. Good spot Adam, so two WW2 names then.

There's no photos of those names unfortunately. Anyone got more pics that cover all the names?

Derek.

I have received a request for a clearer photograph of this memorial to be used on the website on Glasgow in the First World War - would someone be able to visit and get some new photographs?

Thanks in advance.

Ditto!

I have already e-mailed John and requested same. His photos are much clearer that Jim's originals and have asked if he could send them direct to the lady in question (who presumably is the same person as has asked you?).

I have researched most of the names listed on the Nitshill War Memorial over the last three years.

I have an active facebook page where I am attempting to post all the inforamtion as near to the 100 anniversary of the event as possible. Over the next few days I will post up most of the details for each individual. The information has come from a few different sources but mainly the SNWM CWGC and the individual Service Records. In some cases I have also uses information form the census.
