Thomas was recorded at wedding of his son William to Helen Ross on 30 April 1925 so this Thomas isn't the husband of Elizabeth Horne. Otherwise he would have been noted as deceased on the marriage cert which I have a copy of.

Sorry Bill, can you explain please?

The Thomas Donaldson on the memorial died in the first world war and the suggested man (served on HMS Drifter) died in 1916, so even if they are not one and the same, neither would have been alive in 1925. So which Thomas are you referring to? I also will meet with someone from Prestonpans soon so may be able to clarify if I can get a bit more info.

Both of the men below are listed on a Return of Deaths at Scotlandspeople. They drowned 7 miles SSE of May Island in the Firth of Forth when the "Thrive" blew-up after catching a mine in her nets. Both men are shown as born in Cockenzie and their address is shown below.

ARCHIBALD BAILLIE

Archibald Baillie – age 24 – Seaman (6416/A) H.M.S. Clan McNaughton, Royal Naval Reserve.
The Clan MacNaughton was taken over by the Admiralty and commissioned as an auxiliary cruiser in December 1914. In the early days of February 1915 she was on patrol duty off the Hebrides and was last heard of on February 3rd. There was bad weather prevailing at the time and a search of the area where the Clan MacNaughton had been cruising revealed a quantity of wreckage but no signs of the ship.
Born 1891 in Cockenzie, Tranent. Son of John Andrew and Janet (Horne) Baillie of Gardens Close, Cockenzie.
Lost at Sea on 3 February 1915 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.


GEORGE BLAIKIE
George Blaikie – age 25 – Deck Hand (22251/DA) H.M.S. Vivid, Royal Naval Reserve.
George enrolled in the RNR in September 1918 but he died a month later of meningitis in Leith General Hospital.
Born 1892 in Cockenzie, Tranent as George Donaldson Blaikie. Son of John and Mary (Donaldson) Blaikie of Cockenzie. Husband of Isabella (Hare) Blaikie of Hawthorne Bank, Cockenzie and of 27 High Street, Cockenzie who he married in 1915 in Tranent.
Died on Service on 13 October 1918 and buried in Prestonpans New Cemetery. (CWG)


JOHN BIRD
John Harkess Bird – age 25 – Skipper (WSA 2109) H.M. Trawler Helgian, Royal Naval Reserve.
John joined the navy in March 1913 was mobilised as Seaman (3151A) in August 1914. He gained his Mate Certificate and was transferred to the RNR in June 1916. He was the Skipper of the hired trawler/minesweeper “Helgian” when she struck a mine in the Gulf of Ruphani in the Aegean.
Born 1892 in Cockenzie, Tranent. Son of James and Ellen or Helen (Harkess) Bird of 12 East Lorimer Place, Cockenzie.
Died on Active Service/Lost at Sea on 6 September 1917 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.

John enrolled in the RNR in October 1914. He was serving on the “Heathpark”, sailing from Bilbao to Maryport with a cargo of iron ore when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-91 in the Bay of Biscay.

JAMES FLOCKHART
Note: by 1901 the family name had changed from Flucker to Flockhart
James Flockhart – age 21 – Able Seaman (J/50441) H.M.S. Anchusa, Royal Navy.
James was a fisherman when he enlisted in February 1916. He joined the sloop “Anchusa” in May 1917. These ships were Q-ships, which were disguised as normal mercantile shipping within convoys. She was torpedoed and sunk off the north of Ireland by the German submarine U-54.
His body was found at Hartavagh Bay, Lochboisdale.
Born 1897 in Cockenzie, Tranent as James Flucker. Son of James Flucker/Flockhart and Janet (Pow) Flucker/Flockhart of 3 New Street, Cockenzie.
Killed in Action on 16 July 1918 and buried in Hallan Cemetery, South Uist. (CWG)

ADAM HARKESS
Adam Harkess – age 22 – Seaman (6355A) H.M.S. Coquette, Royal Naval Reserve.
Adam was a fisherman when he enrolled in the RNR in October 1914. He joined the destroyer “Coquette” at her base at Sheerness tendered to HMS Actaeon, the gunnery school. She was lost at the entrance to Black Deep near Harwich after striking a mine laid by the German submarine UC-10. She sank in the North Sea east of Clacton-on-Sea with the loss of 22 crewmembers.
Born 1893 in Cockenzie, Tranent as Adam Harkess Allan. Son of Adam and Jane (Allan) Harkess of Gardner's Close, Main Street, Cockenzie.
Killed by Enemy Action/Lost at Sea on 7 March 1916 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.


CHARLES HORNE
Charles Horne – age 19 – Deck Hand (9711/DA) H.M. Trawler Anworth , Royal Naval Reserve.
Charles enrolled in the RNR in November 1915 and joined the “Anwoth”. She was a hired trawler, in service as a minesweeper, then as a hydrophone vessel. He and two other crewmen drowned when their small boat capsized as it made its way to shore at Waxham near Great Yarmouth.
Born 1897 in Cockenzie, Tranent. Son of Charles and Margaret (Scott) Horne of 83 High Street, Prestonpans.
Died on Service on 10 December 1916 and buried in Prestonpans New Cemetery. (CWG)


CHARLES LYALL
Charles Baillie Lyall – age 18 – Deck Hand (12520DA) H.M. Trawler Repro. Royal Naval Reserve.
Charles enrolled in the RNR in October 1916. The trawler “Repro” hit a mine laid by the German submarine UC-41 off Tod Head near Stonehaven.
Born 1898 in Cockenzie, Tranent. Son of Alexander and Helen (Baillie) Lyall 54 Main Street, Cockenzie and of 4 Links Road, Port Seaton.
Killed by Enemy Action/Lost at Sea on 26 April 1917 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.


ADAM STEWART
Adam Stewart – age 25 – Leading Seaman (7049A) S S. Thistledhu, Royal Naval Reserve.
Adam enrolled in the RNR in December 1914. He was serving on the cargo ship “Thistledhu” as she sailed from Iquique in Chile with a cargo of nitrate. She was sunk by the German submarine U-82 off Ireland and four of her crew were lost.
Born 1892 in Cockenzie, Tranent. Son of John and Christian or Kate (Donaldson) Stewart of Rock Terrace, Cockenzie.
Killed by Enemy Action/Lost at Sea on 18 June 1917 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.

ADAM THOMSON
Adam Thomson – age 36 – Deck Hand (6897DA) H.M. Drifter Taits, Royal Naval Reserve.
Adam was living at Middle Row, Footdee, Aberdeen with his wife and family when he enrolled in the RNR in May 1915. He served on the “Taits” which in early 1917 was part of a fleet of drifters laying and monitoring submarine nets in the Strait of Otranto in the Adriatic. The fleet was attacked by Austro-Hungarian naval forces which managed to sink 14 drifters and damage four more.
Born 1882 in Cockenzie, Tranent as Adam Herkes Thomson. Son of David and Marion Wishart (Herkes) Thomson of Cockenzie. Husband of Elspet (Jenkins) Thomson who he married in 1907 in Aberdeen.
From 1922 she became Mrs Alexander Macmillan of 14 Pocra Quay, Footdee, Aberdeen.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 15 May 1917 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.
Also named on the Footdee War Memorial.


CHARLES THOMSON
Charles Thomson – age 24 – Skipper, H.M. Trawler Sapper, Royal Naval Reserve.
Charles enrolled in the RNR as Deck Hand (DA8217) in August 1915. He was promoted to Skipper in August 1917.The minesweeper “Sapper” was lost with all 19 crew in the English Channel off Selsey, West Sussex. The cause of sinking is unknown, but it is probable that the vessel struck a mine laid on 24 December 1917 by the German minelaying submarine UC 71.
Born 1893 in Cockenzie, Tranent. Son of the late George Thomson (died 1912) and of Charlotte (Johnston) Thomson of 1 West Lorimer Place, Cockenzie.
Died on Active Service/Lost at Sea on 29 December 1917 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.

Robert Blackley – age 28 – Lance Corporal (3/1122) 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Robert was a coal miner living at 54 High Street, Cockenzie when he married in June 1914. He joined his battalion in France in September 1914. The timing of this and his service number suggests that he was a reservist.
Born 1887 in Burntisland, Fife as Ralph Cant Blackley. Son of the late Janet (Cant) Blackley (died 1902) and of John Blackley. Husband of Isabella (Mackie) Blackley of 3 East Lorimer Place, Cockenzie who he married in 1914 in Prestonpans.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1915 and buried in Dud Corner Cemetery, Loos, France.


DANIEL BUCHANAN
Daniel Buchanan – age 32 – Gunner (242698) “A” Battery, 147th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Born 1886 in Cockenzie, Tranent. Son of the late Barbara (Crawford) Buchanan (died 1912) and of Daniel Buchanan of Cockenzie. Husband of Margaret (Aikman) Buchanan of 12 Monktonhall Terrace and of 42 New Street, Musselburgh, Midlothian who he married in 1914 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 3 October 1918 and buried in Queant Communal Cemetery British Extension, France.


JOHN D. CUNNINGHAM
John Dickson Cunningham – age 34 – Lance Corporal (325244) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
John enlisted in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots as Private (90) in April 1908 and was discharged as a Lance Sergeant in March 1914. He was a coal miner when he re-enlisted as Private (1100) in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November 1914. He was wounded and evacuated to hospital in the UK in December 1914 and again in June 1915 and yet again in July 1916. John returned to his battalion for the final time in June 1917.
Born 1884 in Prestonpans. Son of William and Ann (Dickson) Cunningham of Cockenzie. Husband of Helen McKenzie (Kinniburgh) Cunningham 67 High Street, Cockenzie who he married in 1909 in Tranent.
Killed in Action on 21 July 1918 and buried in Marfaux British Cemetery, France.

ALBERT CURTISS
Albert Curtis – age 23 – Private (2814) 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
In 1911 Albert was a coal miner aged 18 in Allenshaw Row, Hamilton with the McCaig family - born England. The family came to Port Seton in about 1915. Albert joined his battalion in France in February 1915.
Born c.1892 in England. Foster son of John and Agnes (McPhail) McCaig of Gardner's Buildings, Port Seton.
Missing in Action on 9 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.


GEORGE DICKSON
George Dickson – age 19 – Private (GS/22004) 1st (King's) Dragoon Guards
George was a coal miner when he enlisted in the Royal Scots in January 1916. He was posted to the 1st Cavalry Reserve Regiment in February and to the 1st KDG in France in May.
Born 1898 in Cockenzie, Tranent. Son of William and Rachael (Mathieson) Dickson of 7 Hawthorne Terrace, Cockenzie.
Killed in Action on 14 June 1917 and buried in Templeux-Le-Guerard Communal Cemetery Extension, France.


THOMAS EDMOND
Thomas Edmond – age 34 – Private (9247) 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Thomas had served for six years mainly in India before he was discharged to the Army Reserve. He was a miner at the Preston Links Colliery, Cockenzie when he was recalled to his regiment and he joined his battalion in France in August 1914. He was wounded near Ypres in November and rejoined his battalion three months later.
Born 1881 in Prestonpans. Son of the late George Edmond (died 1909) and Helen (Hardie) Edmond of New Street, Prestonpans. Husband of Ann (Fraser) Edmond who he married in 1911 in Prestonpans.
Missing in Action on 9 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.


THOMAS FRASER
Thomas Fraser – age 27 – Private (S/6919) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Thomas was a miner living at Hawthornebank, Cockenzie when he enlisted in November 1914. He joined his battalion in France in June 1915. He was wounded and evacuated to hospitals in England in August 1915 and again in April 1916. Thomas rejoined his battalion in July 1916.
Born 1889 in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire. Son of the late Donald Fraser (died 1913) and of the late Elizabeth (Irvine) Fraser (died 1898) His sister Janet Fraser Marshall of Cambusnethan by Wishaw, was named as his next of kin.
Missing in Action on 18 August 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

Three sons of late Robert Greig (died 1914) and of Isabella (Ross) Greig (died 1912) and brothers of David Ross Greig of 18 Fishermans Land, Cockenzie.

ARCHIBALD GREIG
Archibald Greig – age 28 – Private (3456) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Archibald was a coal miner when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion in France in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1887 in Cockenzie, Tranent. Husband of Helen (Cunningham) Greig of 6 New Street, Cockenzie and of 54 Park Road, Tranent who he married in 1910 in Tranent.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


ROBERT GREIG
Robert Greig – age 23 – Lance Corporal (13270) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert landed with his battalion in France in May 1915.
Born 1894 in Cockenzie, Tranent.
Missing in Action on 6 June 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


WILLIAM GREIG
William Greig – age 34 – Private (10783) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
William joined his battalion in France in November 1914.
Born 1883 in Cockenzie, Tranent. Husband of Margaret (Drysdale) Greig of Tweedmouth, Northumberland who he married in 1913 in Edinburgh.
Died on Active Service on 15 March 1917 and buried in Bronfay Farm Military Cemetery, Bray-Sur-Somme, France.
Also named on the Tweedmouth War Memorial.
