Hello All,
Should have introduced myself before I started posting. My name is Margaret and I have been researching the Kirknewton War Memorial, West Lothian for a few years. I have an interest in family history, my grandfather(injured) and great uncle(died) were in the Gretna Disaster. I also mentioned my childhood experience on the Kirknewton Memorial page so won't go into it again. Enough to say, as a child, digging up "bodies" made an impression! Both spurred my interest and research. A few questions:
1) I have photographs of Kirknewton and East Calder graves. Could someone tell me how to attach?
2) Is it okay to put on articles copied from newspapers? Is this a copyright fringe? Or is extra material only given if someone asks?
3) Any other hints/tips etc welcome.

Welcome Margaret.

I'm sure there's an instruction guide on how to attach images somewhere, but basically you need to set up a photobucket or flickr account which you can upload them to and then link to them from here on the forum.

Copyright for images of newspapers or books is 70 years after publication, so pretty much everything WW1 is out of copyright.

Margaret, please bear in mind i am no lawyer, but it's my understanding copyright runs out after 70 from publication of a book or photo if it's credited to or published by a company, but runs out 70 years after the death of an individually credited author. So a roll of honour produced bu a local newspaper in the 1920's will certainly be out of copyright but if it was produced by Mr S. Smith who lived until 1950 it wont be out of copyright until 2020.

Hello, It does help a bit. However, I've just posted a few articles dated 1919 and 1921 thinking it was over the 75 years. Unfortunately, in the Midlothian Advertiser lots of news articles don't have the name of the journalist. Wonder if I should delete?

If it doesn't have the name of the journalist, copyright lay with the organisation. In that case copyright expires 70 years after 31st December following the date of publication. So for example an uncredited article published on 13th March 1921 went out of copyright on 1st January 1992. If an article was credited, it falls out of copyright 70 years from 31st December following the death of the author.

Even if an article is still in copyright, you can still use the information in it providing it is paraphrased. Copyright covers the layout and form of words, it does not cover the information it contains.

Thanks Paul. I have been sifting through the Courier and Midlothian Advertiser for information. Lots of good stuff coming to the fore eg someone having an op for varicose veins so he could go to the Front. I have already posted a couple of articles, none had an author. Would your advice be to paraphrase the other articles- don't want to step over the line? They are under Kirknewton Memorial. Thanks

If it was me, if they are not ascribed to an author, then I would copy them verbatim but acknowledge the source. It's always handy to know where the article comes from.
