This was at one time in the United East United Free church at Brothock Bridge, but is now housed in St Andrews church at Hamilton green after merging with them in 1959.

Falconer, Stephen, Seaman R.N.V.R.

He died at sea aged 40 on the 22nd of October 1918 of pneumonia as a passenger aboard the S.S. Cufic.
He is described as a "Distressed British Seaman Paseneger", Boatswain, S.S. Energie. Residence at 2 Ann Street, Arbroath.

So either his vessel was sunk and he was being transported home or he was ill already. Perhaps his pneumonia was a result of being in the sea for a length of time?
After a bit of googling I found this: ENERGY, sailing vessel, 89grt, 15 September 1918, 18 miles E by N from Codling LV, captured by submarine, sunk by gunfire.

There's another Arbroath man called Thomas Strachan who it could be. also in Drake Btn. of the R.N.D. He resided in India for years before the war and the man I've listed lived in the town a stones throw form the U.F. church when he was called up aged 18 in 1916.

I've just looked at the Eastern Forfarshire directory and ARBROATH year book for 1922 and under the pages on Arbroath Churches it says

EAST U F CHURCH : Minister Rev T S Anderson, 1 Springfield Terrace etc but no address shown for the Church

But

HIGH STREET U F CHURCH : Minister Rev James Howat, Lochshade . colleague and successorRev John Tweedie , High St Manse , albert street arbroath and no address shown for the church

Just an idea and a thought or is East U F Church a different church to the High St UF church that is nowadays called the Free Church at the bottom of the arbroath high street ??

The SNWM roll of honour for the Black Watch at the castle in Edinburgh since April 2012 now records

Hendry Charles McLeod Pte 240400, 5th Black Watch , died Hospital Arbroath (infirmary) UK , on 16 February 1918 aged 18 years .

He was only 15 years old when he signed up in August 1914 but was 6ft tall and he wrote his age then as being 17 years 4 months ! Medically discharged under the army act in 1917 and under age too . He was given a military funeral with the authority of the Lt Col of the 2/1 HCB stationed in the McDonald Park in Arbroath .
