I noticed a reference in the P.A. war memorial indexes recently regarding Garth House, Fortingall.
I found the following extract from an article in the Scottish Herald dated 1995;
'but anxious association members recall the lost opportunity that was the sale of Garth Memorial Youth Hostel, given to the association in 1951 in memory of a young naval officer who died in the last war and sold by the SYHA for just £18,000 when dry rot was discovered: a very modest sum even 13 years ago for a mansion-house and stately acres.
Garth Youth Hostel, in the magnificent setting of Glen Lyon -- Scotland's longest glen -- was given to the Scottish Youth Hostels Association by the mother of Lieut Ian Mackenzie-Anderson who died when HM submarine Odin was sunk by enemy action in Tarranton Bay on June 13, 1940. When Garth hostel was sold in 1982 the memorial room was transferred to the hostel at Oban'.
James Martin, general secretary of the association, said: ''The problem with Garth was dry rot. We contacted the Mackenzie-Anderson family before we sold and they had no objection. But that did not prevent some ferocious criticism
Name: ANDERSON, IAN MACKENZIE
Initials: I M
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Lieutenant
Regiment/Service: Royal Navy
Unit Text: H.M. Submarine Odin
Age: 25
Date of Death: 27/06/1940
Additional information: Son of Dr. John B. Mackenzie Anderson and Evelyn Anderson, of Glasgow.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 36, Column 3.
Memorial: PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL
I wonder if the Memorial Room at Oban still exists. The SYHA states the hostel is closed until spring 2011 for refurbishment. |

Good point Hugh. I will move it just now. Although it was originally in Perth & Kinross it is currently in Argyll & Bute so I will move it there. If we can get a photograph of the Garth House building we can post that in the Perth & Kinross section.
Thanks

On looking at Google streetview, Garth House is behind woodland from the road towards Fortingall (about 1½ miles east of the village), so a picture of the house can only be taken by going up the driveway.
See map on streetview.co.uk.
See location on Google Streetview.
For further info.
