This memorial is located just before the entrance to Stirling Castle. It has recently been restored so it looks almost new.

Here's a few photos taken prior to restoration:

And yes, to the left rear of that last photograph, that IS a man in WW2 Battledress. These photos were taken on the day of a "Living History" event at the castle.

This memorial has now been transcribed and partially researched. It is now on-line at www.roll-of-honour.com/Stirlingshire/StirlingAandHSouthAfrica.html The details of the memorial's history, the history of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders during the South African War and several of the men with additional information. Any further information would be very welcome.

I believe that some of the men listed on this Memorial are also on Falkirk's Boer War Memorial:

Lieut. John HUNTER
Pte. John CURRIE (7136)
Pte. William HARLEY (2988)
Pte. John HAY (4063)
Pte. James McBETH (6147)
Pte. James WIGGINS (2817)
Pte. James SCOTT (3844)

There is a slight discrepancy in one man:

L/Cpl. James STENHOUSE is listed on Falkirk as Pte. James Stenhouse (6889)

From an article in the Falkirk Herald, dated 13th January 1900

"Lieutenant Hunter, Falkirk, has been selected as one of the subaltern officers of the company. He holds the P.S. and tactical certificates. During his four years connection with ‘C’ Company, the Lieutenant has taken a great interest in everything pertaining to the success of the Volunteer movement in the district. A splendid shot, he attended Bisley last year, and recorded some excellent scores, while he was captain of the company shooting team. He has in every way proved himself a very capable officer, is held in the highest respect and esteem by the non-com’s and men under him, and leaves for the front with the best wishes of both companies. Lieutenant Hunter is a son of Mr. Robert Hunter of Glenfuir, and was engaged at Port Downie Iron Works, along with his father, the proprietor of the works."

Lieutenant John Hunter died at Heilbron, South Africa 1st July 1900 aged 22.

He is mentioned on both Stirling and Falkirk Boer War Memorials and has, although not buried there, a gravestone in Camelon Cemetery

Pte Millen's grave in South Africa can be seen here. It's worth a look just for the inscription at the foot of the stone...

Had a wee look at the link Adam - very sentimental! Wink

The stone loks as though it's been spaled against the wall, the cement holding it has splattered out and nobody's bothered to clean it up!
