I noticed an article in the local newspaper from August, 1919 regarding the unveiling of Murthly Public School War Memorial. The school still operates in the small village and I dropped by recently holding out little hope that the memorial was still in existence. However, I was taken into the attic floor and amidst the old files, books and registers the memorial was found in storage.

I wonder if this is John Nicolson - the address in NZ is similar (Sydenham, Christchurch)

Ken,

Superb, thanks for that - I'm sure it's him. In the 1901 census (Ancestry) it shows David and Esther with John, David and Edwin at The Station House, Little Dunkeld. Edwin, the youngest, was born Little Dunkeld but David's p.o.b. is shown as Kirkhill, Inverness-shire although if he was brought up in Perthshire he will probably have assumed he was born there.

Blairgowrie Advertiser Saturday 30th August 1919

Honouring the Brave

Colonel Fothringham presided at a gathering in Murthly School to witness the unveiling,by Mrs Fothringham,of the School`s Roll of Honour,on which are engraved 52 names.
Mr W Sprunt, headmaster, said that the memorial was probably unique in that it had been erected entirely by contributions from former pupils who were not privileged to wear the King`s uniform.
Rev HK Reekie also took part in the ceremony.
