The name George Cowan - Private KOSB appears on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer Memorial in Dumfries. It also appears on the Kirkconnel Memorial, Dumfriesshire.
I can't find any George Cowan with links to the KOSB or either place.
Help, please.

Ken

This man is 16718 George Cowan, 2nd KOSB, son of Mrs Jeannie Cowan , 20 Nithsdale Terrace, Kirkconnel

He enlisted 17 Nov 1914 and was discharged exactly three years later, address then 5 Mitchells Lane, off Market St, Maxwelltown.

Do you have his death registration ? If so can you mail it to me directly. It might be you have found another CWGC non comm.
Can advise on checking

George Cowan is now known to be buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.

2 reports from the D&G Standard

SOLDIER'S DEATH AT LOCHMABEN
Private George Cowan, who resided with his mother at 20 Nithside Cottages, Kirkconnell, died on Monday morning at Lochmaben as the result of wounds receved in action in France. He had had three years' service in France. He was only twenty years of age. Gassed at Hill 60, he was wounded on the Somme, and again on two occasions thereafter. He was at home in August, but returned to France early in September. He had to be sent home again, however, owing to the effects of gas poisoning, and was admitted to hospital at Sheffield. Three weeks ago he was discharged from that hospital, and on Thursday last went to Lochmaben Hospital where he died at six o'clock on Monday morning. Before enlisting he was employed as a miner. His family have been resident in Dumfries for the past five months. He is to be buried today with military honours. (12/12/1917)

MILITARY FUNERAL
The funeral of Private George Cowan, whose death occurred at Lochmaben Hospital on Monday, as the result of wounds received in action in France and the effect of gas poisoning, took place on Wednesday from residence of the family in Mitchell's Lane, Maxwelltown to St. Michael's Cemetery. The funeral was semi-military in character, and the cortage was headed by the pipe band of the Arrol-Johnston Cadet Corps, under Sergeant Wishart, which played "The Flowers of the Forest" and "Scots wha hae" on the way to the cemetery. There was a large assembly of mourners, including a contingent of wounded soldiers from Broomlands Hospital. The Rev. Father Murphy was the officiating clergyman. (15/12/1917)

16718 Pte. George Cowan, 2nd KOSB has been forwarded as a case to CWGC / MOD as a non comm post discharge death due to service related causes (Phthisis Pulmonary).

There is no mention of gassing in his records.

As already detailed his burial place is known.
Well done Ken in finding him.

Well done all and good to see Jim's involvement pay off after all these years since he is not in the best of health at the moment.
