Listed on the memorial for WW1 under the Scottish Rifles is Cpl. William Clamp V.C.
This was his regiment before a transfer to the Yorkshire Reg.

He has recently been added to the Craigneuk war memorial also, which had name panels added in 2011.

"Intimation has been received that four Motherwell men have been killed in the war.
Daniel Donaldson, a reservist of the Royal Army Medical Corps, was lying wounded in a hospital, which was fired upon by the Germans, when he was killed by the splinter of a bursting shell. His widow resides in Findlay Street.

"Official intimation has been received by Mr Wm. Tuft, Union Street, Motherwell, that his brother, Sergeant D.C. Tuft, of the Seaforth Highlanders, had been killed in action. The Sergeant, who had been 15 years in the Army, was serving in India and had went to France with the Indian contingent."

BLACK WATCH
Pte. Alexander Valentine

Listed on both the Arbroath and Motherwell memorials & Arbroath RoH. He moved to Motherwell for work.

The following are on the Arbroath War Memorial:
James Donaldson, he worked as a driller at Motherwell Bridge Works for 8 years prior to the war having moved from Arbroath as a Baker. He died aged 33 on 13 Oct 1915.
Wilfred Meekison who was 33 worked as a steel worker in Motherwell after leaving Arbroath and he was killed by a shell on 23/06/1916.
Alexander McLean Miller was born in Dalziel, Motherwell. His mother remarried A. Rennie from Arbroath and they moved there. He joined the Royal Scots and was transferred to the Royal Engineers. He died of pneumonia in Salonica on 21/09/1918 and left a daughter.

(Glasgow Herald 8th of Feb 1915)
"The War Office have intimated to Mrs Valentine, 131 Merry Street, Motherwell, that her husband, Private Alexander Valentine, Black Watch, was killed in action on January 25. Valentine was a member of the National Reserve, and rejoined the colours after the war broke out. He was employed in Dalzell steel works, and was leader of Motherwell pipe band. He leaves three children."

"Notification has been made to Mr James Walker, mason, Windmill Street, Motherwell, that his son, Private Abraham Walker, 2nd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, was killed in action on February 17. Walker, as a volunteer, served through the South African War, and at the outbreak of the present hostilities he enlisted on August 7, and withing a few days was in the fighting line in France. He was a mason to trade, and served his apprenticeship with Provost Park, Motherwell."

He was a native of Ecclefechan, and before the war broke out was in the employment of the British Welding Company at Motherwell."

"Following a request from the Army for a full description of her brother, Private Michael McElroy, Mrs James Low, residing at Caledonian Railway Buildings, Greenhill, Bonnybridge, has been notified that wounds sustained by him in action had prioved fatal, he having died on March 5th at the base hospital. Private McElroy immediately after the declaration of war enlisted in the Dublin Fusiliers, and crossed to the continent on December 26. He had been employed by Messrs D. Colville & sons (Limited), Dalziel Steel Works, Motherwell."

(Glasgow Herald 2nd April 1915)
"Lance Corporal Ronald Paisley, Seaforth Highlanders, has been killed in action at Neuve Chapelle. He was a son of Mr James Paisley, joiner, Caledonian Street, whose second son, Private Robert Paisley, Seaforth Highlanders, was invalided home from the front. When the news of Ronalds death was received the invalid brother was so much upset that he collapsed and died almost immediately. He was buried with military honours. He had accompanied the Indian Expeditionary Force to France."

Ronald/Roland Paisley

Although born as Roland and called as such by the Army he is listed on the memorial and in the press report as Ronald.
According to the War Return he was killed in action aged 20.

According to his D.C. he was in the 1st Battalion Seaforths and died from pneumonia as the result of alcoholism aged 28.
