The new CWGC site went live this morning.
As with all complex sites, there may be minor glitches to deal with, but the whole thing is a tremendous improvement.

The biggest improvement is the facility to download any part of the database. You can take your selection to your own computer and analyse it as you wish.

Excellent stuff.
The databse search options are great too, the "9 times mentioned in Despatches" option threw me a bit!

Glad they have taken their time and done it wright.

Derek.

One slight grump is that the "country" drop-down list of options only has United Kingdom, and no option search by individual countries within that - I have fed that back to them and they have acknowledged it - fingers crossed that gets changed.

Apart from that, looks like a great redesign. I've not had much of a chance to dig too deeply into it, and my PC at work (which still runs ancient Internet Explorer 6) couldn't get the site to work, but I like what I see so far.

Just noticed that the "search for a cemetery" option enables you to narrow it down to county - that'll be useful.

Strangely, I noticed that St John's Kirk Old Churchyard, Covington is listed but has 0 for the number of recorded casualties. Looking further in, it states there are six Polish burials there. Unfortunately they don't provide details of these.

Do you think they might add this information at a later date? That would be a useful resource.

No.

CWGC cares for tens of thousands of Non-World War Dead and Foreign National War Graves under contract and by agreement with governments rather than as part of their Royal Charter obligations. Effectively CWGC are simply maintenance contractors for these graves.

The MoD has requested that CWGC does not include the Non World War graves (most are MoD's responsibility) and it is the responsibility of the foreign governments to list their respective casualties. Being non Commonwealth, it is up Polish authorities to provide the Covington details publically if they want them made available.

Some Polish details here - http://www.polishwargraves.nl/

This does look promising. I do like the sort of "drop down" list which appears when you start to input Rank or Regiment, and I do like the Filter Option (whiich can also be used as a basic search function)
I don't like the small size of font when you print out but that's a minor moan.

Try this:

Select the cemetery and search. Follow the usual links.

Thanks Geoff, really impressive work there.

So the information on Polish and other nationalities is on the CWGC site but not generally accessible?

The records are in their database. Before the recent upgrade the link lead to a 'Record Unavailable' page only. I'm not sure if the links have been put there in error as you cannot search for them on their page.

The info is not (and never was) on the CWGC site, but is in the database behind it which they use in their day to day work, much like the data any business holds on it's customers. It is their own internal record.
It is not publically available for the reasons I gave earlier.

As far as I know Geoff is still accessing data he obtained which is several years out of date, but the old links from it to the CWGC info will still work. CWGC committed that existing links would work after the new database / site changes so that existing hyperlinks ( eg. here and elswhere ) would still work.

The only source of info which is " live " , ie. continually being updated, is held by CWGC.

Geoff's search engine, still operational for searches on:

Ship/Unit text.
Age.
Citation.
Secondary unit text (useful for battalion and Labour Corps numbers).
Additional Info.

Anyone wishing to download the entire series (I've not tried it) might like to consider these date ranges, which should all be under the maximum allowed 75,000 records per download. Although I cannot guarantee this as I've generated these dates from Geoff's Search Engine but not tested it.
You don't get the Citation field or the Additional Information field. Not sure why not?

(I'm assuming that a record with a death date range, is allocated to the first date when searching on date)

Cheers,

geoff
