PostPosted: Tue Jan 30, 2007 4:52 pm    Post subject: Sutherland’s Great War Dead - Mc / Mac Reply with quote

Over the past few years I have been collecting the names from the war memorials of Sutherland and also searching through databases, rolls of honour, old newspapers etc. for information on those who had a connection with Sutherland who have died in the wars of the 20th Century. I forgot to mention Jock Bruce in the A-E and F-L posts. Jock very kindly shared a lot of his research on the Sutherland men of the 5th Seaforths with me a few years ago.

I will post all the data I have onto the forum split into manageable chunks. There are lot of names in this post but I didn’t want to split the Mc / Macs up.

There are men listed here who enlisted in Golspie, the HQ of 5th Bn Seaforth Highlanders and have no connection to Sutherland other than that they enlisted in the county so they may well be listed on other Scottish war memorials.

I have also added those listed on the Reay and Edderton memorials. although one was is in Caithness and the other in Ross & Cromarty they are so closely connected to their nearest Sutherland communities and shared so many names it was worth including them as well.

I will update this list if I find out any more information and I would welcome any other information on these men and women.

I do not differentiate between Mc and Mac as a prefix so for example you may find a MacKay, a Mackay and a McKay one after the other

I would be grateful to here from the clever guy who established that John Macleod died of heat stroke

MacLEOD John
Rank: Private
Regimental Number: S/16835
Unit: 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders
Died: Heat stroke 12.6.18
Age: 30
Parents: Hector and A.I. MacLeod of Hillview Ardgay
Buried: Lahore Cantonment Cemetery, Punjab, India
Memorials: Listed on the Kincardine and Croick War Memorial, Ardgay, as Lance Corporal

John was the elder brother of my grandfather and I have been trying to find out what happened to him for many years. As is indicated, the war memorial in Ardgay has him recorded as a Lance corporal. I also have a memorial card for him that has him as Lance corporal. His medal card, CWGC and SNWM has him as a private. The Above post has a death date of 12 June, all other sources are 12 July. Was this a typo or is this the date on the source with his cause of death. I would be really interested on where the cause of death was listed
Kind Regards
Ross

John

Sorry, the date will have been a typo on my part. I transcribed hundreds of entries for Sutherland men and women from the old CWGC & SDGW registers a few years ago a few errors such as this have crept in.

The details of his death were from the 'Northern Times' of 1918. It quite often listed men from the communities of Caithness and Ross-shire which bordered Sutherland.

Note how his unit is listed as 1st Gordons as well. The 1st Gordons were part of the original BEF and stayed in France until after the war so he must have been attached to some other unit at the time of his death.

Regards

Adam

The memorial card I have mentions the first Garrison Bn Gordon Highlanders. I was aware the Gordons were part of the BEF and this intrigued me for many years. If anyone else out there is interested I did find this small piece of history about the 1st Garrison Bn of the Gordons

1st Garrison Bn. Formed in 1916. In Jan 1917 went to India and joined the Rawalpindi Brigade, 2nd (Indian) Division.

indian division
-2nd (Rawalpindi) Division
4th (Rawalpindi) Brigade.
--West Frontier.
----- 1st Garrison Bn Gordon Highlanders. Mar 1917 - Jun 1918. To the Rawalpindi Additional Brigade.

Rawalpindi Additional Brigade.

1st Garrison Bn Gordon Highlanders. Jun 1918 - 11 Nov 1918.[/i]

Cheers
Ross

Ross

1st Garrison Battalion makes a lot more sense. I will update the details as soon as I can.

Thanks
