Tonight on Grampian News there was a piece about the men who are remembered in Braemar and buried in Dyce.

Any idea why some of the graves are shown as "Sp. Mem."
I assume this means special memorial???
We don't seem to have Dyce Old Churchyard on the SWGP. Confused

"Sp. Mem." indicates that the casualties not buried at the headstone / memorial.
In this case the headstones are inscribed " Buried near this spot "

Hm. Kind of begs the question - why?

The story of the crash and of the recovery and burial of the remains is at

together with full biographies of the Australian, British, Canadian and New Zealand airmen.
The story of Pilot/Instructor James W Thomson, DFC, RNZAF is especially sad.
