GOWANS, DAVID Pte. R.Innis.Fus. 1 July 1916.
David Gowans, Private (24727) 11th Battalion (Donegal and Fermanagh), Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Age 29.
A former pupil of the Dalbeattie Higher Grade Public School. David enlisted in Fermanagh and landed with his battalion in France in October 1915.
Born 1887 at Dalbeattie. Son of James and Barbara Barr Gowans. Husband of Agnes Gibson Gowans who he married at Douglas Hall, Colvend in 1911.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France and on the Dalbeattie War Memorial.
1 July 1916 was the first day of the first battle of the Somme where the Ulster Division attacked the German trenches at Thiepval.


GRIEVE, JAMES ROSS Major, MC RFA 4 April 1918.
James Ross Grieve, Military Cross, Major: Royal Field Artillery. Age 34.
James was educated at St Andrew's school in Eastbourne and at Cheltenham College. He obtained a commission in the RFA which he resigned in 1906. In August 1914 he enlisted as a Trooper in the King Edward's Horse but was re-commissioned as a Lieutenant in the RFA in January 1915. He went to France in August 1915 and was promoted to Captain. He was awarded the M.C. in January 1917 and promoted to Major in the August.
Born 1884 at Ivy Cottage, Rockcliffe, Colvend. Son of William and Margaret Elinor (Hodgkinson) Grieve of Gipsy Lane, Putney, London and of Rockcliffe, Colvend.
Killed in Action on 4 April 1918 and buried at Moreuil Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.

GRIEVE, WILLIAM PERCIVAL 2nd Lieut. 3rd Middx.R. 14 Feb. 1915
.
William Percival Grieve, 2nd Lieutenant 3rd Battalion, Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment). Age 29.
William was educated at St Andrew's school in Eastbourne, at Cheltenham College, and had been a medical student at Edinburgh University. In August 1914 he enlisted as a Trooper in the King Edward's Horse but was commissioned in the 5th Middlesex Regiment in November 1914. He landed with the 3rd Battalion at Le Havre on 18 January 1915.
Born 1885 at Croyden. Son of William and Margaret Elinor (Hodgkinson) Grieve of Fenchurch Avenue, London and of Rockcliffe, Colvend. Husband of Dorothy or Doris Marie (Hartley) Grieve who he married in 1914 in Fulham, London.
Missing in Action on 14 February 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

a third brother, Charles Christopher Grieve, - age 38 - Major, Cameron Highlander died in the Central Military Hospital, Cork, Ireland on 22 September 1920 and is buried in Cork Military Cemetery Park.
He was born c.1882 in Rangoon, Burma. Commission in 1900 from Sandhurst.

HANDLEY, JAMES ALEX. Corpl. 17th King's L'pool. R. 30 July 1916.
James Alexander Handley, Corporal (15774) 17th Battalion, The King's (Liverpool Regiment). Age 24.
James was an engineer when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November 1915.
Born 1891 at Runcorn, Cheshire. Son of the late Thomas Handley J.P. of Runcorn and of Jessie Ann (Littler) Handley of Beaconhurst Heston Road, Runcorn and of Kippford, Colvend.
Missing in Action on 30 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.


HYSLOP, WILLIAM Pte. 14th HLI 22 Oct. 1917*.
Note: All records give his year of death as 1916.
William Hyslop, Private (28874) 14th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Age 20.
William was a farm servant at Roundfell Farm, Southwick when he enlisted. The 14th HLI landed in France in June 1916.
Born 1896. Son of John and Agnes Hyslop of Dalbeattie. Brother Alexander Hyslop of West Gillsyke, Gretna, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 22 October 1916 and named on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.


MILROY, JAMES Pte. RCD 9 Dec. 1917.
James Milroy, Trooper (114764) Royal Canadian Dragoons. Age 42.
James was ranching when he joined the 9th Canadian Mounted Rifle Regiment at Maple Creek, Saskatchewan in December 1914, listing his mother and half-sister Elizabeth McKnight of Shannon Creek, Barnbarroch, Colvend as his next of kin. He sailed from Canada in November 1915 and was later transferred to the Royal Canadian Dragoons.
Born 1875 at Stoneykirk, Wigtonshire as James McDowall Wilson. Son of James Milroy and Margaret Wilson. (Margaret later married John McKnight of Rock Cottage, Colvend).
Killed in Action on 9 December 1917 and buried at Tincourt New British Cemetery, Somme, France.

THOMSON, DAVID Pte. 1st 7th WYR 18 April 1918.
I still cannot identify personal details of this man and his connection to Colvend.
David Thomson, Private (59157) 1/7th Battalion (Leeds Rifles) West Yorkshire Regiment. (Prince of Wales Own)
Born ? at Glasgow. Resident of Dalbeattie. Mother Rachael.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1918 and buried at Kortrijk (St. Jan) Communal Cemetery, Belgium.


KIRKLAND, THOMAS 1st Cl. Petty Off. RNR Sept 1914.
Thomas Lindsay Kirkland, 1st Class Petty Officer (170934) HMS Hogue, Royal Navy Reserve. Age 38.
Thomas had joined the navy in June 1894 when he was 18 years old. During his service he was awarded the East and West Africa Medal (Benin Expedition) and the Naval General Service Medal (Persian Gulf). He joined the cruiser “Hogue” on 30 July1914 but was lost when his ship was sunk in the North Sea by the German submarine U-9.
Born 1876 at Campbelltown, Argyllshire. Son of Daniel and Mary (Lindsay)Kirkland of Upper Barnbarroch, Colvend. Husband of Lousia M. A. Kirkland of Franche Court Road, Lower Tooting, London who he married in 1913 at Wandsworth, London.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 22 September 1914 and named on the Chatham Naval Memorial and on the Southwick War Memorial.


MASON, ROBERT C. Sergt. Maj. 5th Aust. I.F. 23 Aug. 1918.
Robert Mason, Military Medal, Company Sergeant Major (4860) 5th Battalion, Australian Infantry. Age 31.
Robert was a commercial traveller when he enlisted in October 1915 in Melbourne and sailed on HMAT Wiltshire for England in March 1916, arriving in June. He was posted to the 5th AIF in France in March 1917 and was appointed CSM in December. Robert had been awarded the M.M. in October 1917 for 'Determination and personal courage as senior NCO of carrying party, rendering valuable services.' He was wounded in April 1918 and evacuated to hospital in England before returning to France and re-joining his battalion on 16 August 1918. He was wounded again and died at the 41st Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1887 in Kirkwall, Orkney. Son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Stephen) Mason of 31 Gardiners Crescent, Edinburgh.
Husband of Jemima Jessie (McVinnie) of Antiles Cottage, Kippford, Colvend who he married in Colvend Church on 14 August 1916.
Killed in Action on 23 August 1918 and buried at Daours Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.

MAXWELL, SAMUEL Pte. KOSB 3 May 1917.
Samuel Dickson Maxwell, Private (22770) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 27.
Samuel was a farm servant at Torrs, Colvend when he enlisted in early 1916. He was wounded and returned to France in September 1916.
Born 1891 at High Street, Dalbeattie. Son of John and Janet ( Bell) Maxwell of High Street, Dalbeattie and of Barleys, Colvend.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


MILLIGAN, JOHN Pte. RSF 12 Oct. 1916.
John Milligan, Private (43400) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 26.
John enlisted in February 1916 in the 14th Battalion, Royal Scots. He was posted to the RSF.
Born 1890 at Kirkcowan, Wigtownshire. Son of Andrew and Jessie (Anderson) Milligan of East Barcloy, Colvend.
Killed in Action on 12 October 1916, buried in AIF Burial Ground Flers, Somme, France.


MURDOCH, WILLIAM Pte. Kings L'pool Rif. 12 Oct. 1916.
William Murdoch, Private (51665) 17th Battalion (1st City) The King's (Liverpool Regiment) Age 22.
Born 1893 at Auckland Cottage, Colvend. Son of John Murdoch (Master Mariner) and Catherine (Halliday) Murdoch of Colvend, of 11 Dundonald Road, Aigburth, Liverpool and of West Kirby, Cheshire.
Missing in Action on 12 October 1916and named on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

MURRAY, WILLIAM Pte. KOSB 19 April 1917.
William Murray, Private (241651) 1/5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 33.
William was a gardener when he enlisted in 1916.
Born 1883 at Loch House, Colvend. Son of James and Agnes Johnstone Murray of Bengal Cottage, Colvend. Husband of Elizabeth Cassie (Largue) Murray of Kirkhouse, Colvend who he married in 1912 in Colvend.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 at Gaza and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.


McDIARMID, KENNETH Capt. 2nd KOSB 18 April 1915.
Kenneth McDiarmid, Captain 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 33.
Kenneth was educated at Sedberg School, Yorkshire (now Cumbria) and Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester before he took up an appointment with the Bombay Burma Trading Corporation. He enlisted as a Trooper in the Scottish Horse Yeomanry in August 1914 when home on leave from Burma, and was granted a commission in the KOSB in September 1914. He was posted to the 2nd KOSB in France in March 1915. He was a Lieutenant with “A” company on Hill 60 near Ypres when they came under attack. Of the 160 men some 130 were killed or wounded before the enemy were driven off. He was promoted to Captain subsequent to his death.
Born 1881 at Toxteth Park, Liverpool. Son of Mary Ann Jemima (Hosack) McDiarmid of Auchenvhin, Rockcliffe, Colvend and the late John McDiarmid. (Ship owner)
Missing in Action on 18 April 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Sedberg School memorial.


McLELLAN, JOHN Pte. Gord. Highrs. 19 Dec. 1915.
John James McClelland, Private (9764) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Age 28.
John James McClelland – age 28 – Private (9764) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
In 1911 John was serving with the Gordons and was based at Goojerat Barracks, Colchester and so was probably a reservist when he was working on a farm at Colvend in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne on 31 August 1914.
Born 1887 at Kirkmabeck, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of David McClellan of Danevale Crossing, Crossmichael, Castle Douglas and of his first wife Jane or Jeannie (Johnstone) McClelland.
Killed in Action on 19 December 1915 and buried at La Clytte Military Cemetery, Belgium.
The Stewartry Roll of Honour has two entries with identical details. One for John McLellan of Colvend and one for John McClellan of Crossmichael where he is remembered with three brothers on the village War Memorial.

McNEILL, ROBERT Sergt. 2nd Scottish Rifles 25 July 1918.
Robert McNeill, Sergeant (41950) 2nd Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Formerly Private (15842) 2nd and 6th/7th Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 27.
Robert was a shepherd at Torbay Farm, Colvend when, together with his brother William he enlisted in November 1914. (William Hutton Private 15846) They joined the 2nd RSF in France in April 1915 but both were wounded at Givenchy in May 1915 and evacuated back to the UK. They returned to France to serve with the 6th/ 7th RSF and Robert was later posted to the Scottish Rifles.
Born 1891 (as Robert Hutton) at Girthon, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Janet (Hutton) McNeill and stepson of Robert McNeill of Low Nunton, Twynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire and of Largs Gardens, Twynholm.
Killed in Action on 24 July 1918 and buried at Sucrerie Cemetery Ablain-St. Nazaire, France.
Also named on the Twynholm War Memorial.


McVINNIE, ROBERT U. Sapper R.E. 11 Nov. 1919.
Not listed by CWGC
Robert Wallace McVinnie, Sapper (314161) Inland Waterways and Docks, Royal Engineers. Age 31.
Robert was tailor when he married in 1917. He was discharged from the army in March 1919 but within a few months he was admitted to Stobhill Military Hospital in Glasgow where he died of profound aenemia. He was described as a seaman and an army pensioner.
Born 1888 at Hollywood, Dumfriesshire. Son of James and Agnes McVinnie of Hazelmount, Kippford. Husband of Jessie (Milligan) McVinnie of 186 High Street, Dalbeattie who he married in June 1917 in Dalbeattie.
Died on 11 November 1919 and buried in Dalbeattie Cemetery.
Also remembered on the Dalbeattie War Memorial.


PAISLEY, JAMES L.Corpl. 5th KOSB 30 Nov.1917.
James Paisley, Lance Corporal (25742) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 31.
Robert enlisted in August 1916 and was posted to the 7th/8th KOSB and then the 6th KOSB before joining the 1st KOSB. He had been wounded twice. The Red Cross in Geneva reported that his identity disc had been passed to them and that his body, found after the Battle of Cambrai, had been buried in Seranville German Cemetery.
Born 1888 at Kirkbean. Son of John and Isabella Paisley of East Barcloy, Colvend.
By 1911 the family were at Landican, Woodchurch near Birkenhead where John was the farm bailiff
Husband of Lily (Vizer) Paisley of Lamond Place, Dalbeattie who he married in 1912 in West Derby, Liverpool.
Missing in Action on 30 November 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louveral, France and on the Dalbeattie War Memorial.

PARK, HUGH Gunner. R.F.A. 6 Aug. 1915.
Hugh Park, Gunner (75336) 87th Battery, Royal Field Artillery. Age 22.
Hugh had been educated at Colvend School and joined the army in December 1913. He landed with his battery at St. Nazaire in September 1914 as part 12 Brigade RFA. He was killed at Flamertieres, while laying telephone wires.
Born 1892 at Stair, Ayrshire. Son of Robert and Jessie Park of Corsock Farm, Colvend.
Killed in Action 6 August 1915, buried in Hop Store Cemetery Vlamertinghe, Belgium and also named on the Dalbeattie War Memorial.


POOL, JAS. WILLIAMSON Lieut. 6th Scottish Rifles 20 Sept. 1917.
James Williamson Pool, 2nd Lieutenant 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). Formerly Corporal (1289) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 20.
James was educated at Colvend and Barnbarroch schools and at Skerry's College in Glasgow before being employed at the bank in New Galloway in May 1914. He served with the Territorial 5th KOSB and was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915, was wounded on 12 July and evacuated to hospital in Dalmeny near Edinburgh. Due to illness he remained in the UK and a year later was selected for officer training, being commissioned in October 1916 in the 6th Cameronians and attached to the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He went to France in January 1917 but was wounded again. He returned to his battalion on 6 September but was killed two weeks later.
Born 1897 at Whitehill, Colvend. Son of James and Jessie Pool of West Barcloy and of Blairash, Colvend.
Missing in Action on 20 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial and the Dalbeattie War Memorial.


WRIGHT, ROBERT Pte. Royal Highrs. 18 Aug. 1916.
Robert Wright, Private (S/7910) 10th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). Age 37.
Robert was a ploughman when he enlisted in January 1915. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in September 1915 but in November the battalion moved to Salonika in northern Greece. Robert died in hospital of enteric fever.
Born 1878 at Fairgirth Cottage, Colvend. Son of John and Jane Wright of Lochbank, Colvend. Husband of Mary Elizabeth (Bigham) Wright of Summerhill, Holywood Dumfriesshire, later Mrs. Robert Murray of Rutherglen, who he married in 1904 at Colvend.
Died on Active Service on 18 August 1916 and buried in Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery, Greece.


YOUNG, DOUGLAS CAMPBELL Lieut. R.F.A. 18 Sept. 1915.
Douglas Campbell Young, Lieutenant 4th Lowland (Howitzer) Brigade, 52nd Division, Royal Field Artillery. Age 29.
Douglas was educated at the Collegiate School, Queen's Park, at Allan Glen's School and the Royal Technical College in Glasgow before he became the Assistant Manager in is father's chemical manufacturing company. He had served with the Dunbartonshire Mounted Rifle Volunteers and was commissioned in October 1914. He was promoted to Lieutenant with the 52nd Division Ammunition Column in Egypt in May 1915 before re-joining the 4th Brigade at Gallipoli where he contracted dysentery. He was evacuated to the 21st General Hospital in Alexandria where he died.
Born 1886 at Blairlogie, Perthshire. Son of Robert Young of Hamilton Drive, Glasgow and of Castlehill, Rockcliffe, Colvend.
Died on Active Service on 18 September 1915 and buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Allan Glen's School and the Royal Technical College Rolls of Honour.


BLYTH, JAMES Pte. KOSB 27 April 1920.
Not listed by CWGC
James Blyth – age 21 – Private: King’s Own Scottish Borderers.
James enlisted in the KOSB in August 1917 and was transferred to the Royal Scots. He died of TB and Cardiac Failure at the Richmond Military Hospital, Dublin. His death certificate identifies him as James Blythe, an ex-soldier of The Cottage, Barnbarroch, Dalbeattie,
Born 1899 at Castle Douglas, Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Robert and Anne (Peacock) Blyth of Burn Street, Dalbeattie and of Barnbarroch, Colvend.
His father Robert was a gardener when he enlisted in December 1915. He was mobilised in June 1916 and served with various unit on “Home” duties until his discharge in 1919.
Died on 27 April 1920. Burial place unknown.

I have received word that Gunner Duncan has been accepted by the miltary authorites as having died of war related causes.
If anyone has knowledge of his place of burial I would be interested in the details.

Well done Jim and thank you so much for your efforts.
I've e-mailed all the details to the Stewartry Museum. The curator, David, does a regular column for the local newspaper and I'm hoping he'll combine George's story with a request for any knowledge of his grave.

George Duncan was added to the CWGC Debt of Honour register on Friday. If the location of his grave cannot be established his name will be added at Brookwood.

George Duncan enlisted into the 2nd Kirkcubrightshire Battery 2/2 Lowland Field Artillery Brigade (T.F.) at Kirkcudbright on 4th June 1915 and was given the number 4440. He stated he was born at Urr, Kircudbrighshire. His NOK is his mother Jane Duncan, Wholehouse, Springholm, Dalbeatie. He later states he was a farm servant at Barstibly, Castle Douglas on enlisting.

He is re-numbered 655782 in 1917 and it appears he went to France in Dec that year.
His records show he was admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital at Rouen on 19 April 1918 with Pulmonary TB ( mild). He was returned to the UK and is recorded as " sick " in Grove Military Hospital, Tooting on 22nd April 1918. His Medical Discharge process began on 1st May.

George was discharged " physically unfit " for further service under Kings Regulations on 4th July 1918 with a weekly pension of 27/6d. The reason given as Tubercule of lung due to a/s ( Active Service) ie. TB.
On discharge he is in 158th Battary RFA and states he will reside at Woodside, Barnbarrock, Dalbeatie

The cause of his death at Dumfries Infirmary on 19th August 1920 aged 22 is given as Tuberculosis of Lung. Tubercular Peritonitis and Tubercular Kidney.
His usual Residences is given as Woodside, Colvend. ( I suspect Woodside, Colvend and Woodside, Barnbarrock, Dalbeatie may be the same place)

His parents are given as Jane Duncan ( mother) only. Checking births in Kircudbrightshire 1896-1899 gives only one George Duncan ( a twin), he was born at Springholm, Urr, illeg to Jane Duncan, Dairymaid on 10th Dec 1897.

Lt Alexander Milligan Thomson Glover of 70 Sqn was a pilot. Killed in action 17th August 1917. He is listed on the Arras memorial. He was flying Camel serial B2319 at the time of death.

Robert Mason, CSM 4860 5th Australian Infantry - just got this from CWGC

Dear Mr Morrison

Thank you for your e mail of 18 October. With regard to your query concerning CSM Robert Mason. I have checked our records and can confirm that we do have record of his having been awarded the MM. It would appear that when our records were originally transcribed however, the information was not transferred to our registers. We have now added this however and the amended version appears below. Our records have also been annotated accordingly and when the casualty’s headstone is due for replacement in the coming years, the new headstone will be engraved with the MM.
