The plaque is outside Little Dunkeld Parish Church, Birnam;

Its the bottom one - Rifleman James Taylor A.F.F.
Any ideas for A.F.F.?

This may be a red herring, but there was a proposed Allied Fighting Force of displaced Jews when stories of the holocaust started to emerge. I think the Jewish Brigade came about from that (they fought in Greece under a British flag I think). Only problem is, I don't see how that connects to Scotland or the name James Taylor. So must be some other AFF I think.

I've tried trawling through the SNWM, CWGC and Australian War memorial databases.

I thought AFF might be a shortened form of RWAFF for the Royal West African Frontier Force but no suitable candidates were found and I think it was UK sergeants and officers only which served with this regiment.

The Australian WW2 Nominal Roll

http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/script/veteran.asp?ServiceID=A&VeteranID=741313

came up with this chap.

Name TAYLOR, JAMES TEMPLETON
Service Australian Army
Service Number WX4921
Date of Birth 12 Nov 1905
Place of Birth DUNKELD, SCOTLAND
Date of Enlistment 23 Jul 1940
Locality on Enlistment PERTH, WA
Place of Enlistment CLAREMONT, WA
Next of Kin TAYLOR, JAMES
Date of Death 11 Jul 1943
Rank Sergeant
Posting on Death 2/4 Machine Gun Battalion
WW2 Honours and Gallantry None for display
Prisoner of War Yes
Roll of Honour PERTH WA

CWGC entry

Name: TAYLOR, JAMES TEMPLETON
Initials: J T
Nationality: Australian
Rank: Sergeant
Regiment/Service: Australian Infantry
Unit Text: A.I.F. 2/4 M.G. Bn.
Age: 37
Date of Death: 11/07/1943
Service No: WX4921
Additional information: Son of James Templeton Taylor and Catherine Taylor, of Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: A13. A. 19.
Cemetery: THANBYUZAYAT WAR CEMETERY

Is it the same chap? In which case AFF might be Australian Field Force? However it is Rifleman on the memorial and Sergeant on the Roll.

Unconnected to the above thread but I know of two Sutherland men who died in 2/4th MG Bn as well.

I've just checked the post on the main Dunkeld memorial, I should have done that first!

Rifleman James Taylor is listed as Australian but I can't make out the rest of the inscription.

I find it is the searching where I learn stuff, not necessarily getting the answer at the end. I enjoy the hunt, even when I don't get the quarry Laughing
