"Serial Range DS601 - DS852 This aircraft was one of 200 Lancasters ordered from Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft in 1941 and built as Mk.11s from Sep42 to Oct43 with, up to DS627, Hercules V1 engines and the remainder Hercules XV1 engines. DS735 was delivered to No.514 Sqdn Sep43. Took part in the following key Operations: Gardening 3/4Nov43, No.514 Sqdns first Lancaster operation; Berlin 26/27Nov43; Berlin 16/17Dec43; Berlin 23/24Dec43; Brunswick 14/15Jan44; Berlin 27/28Jan44;
Berlin 30/31Jan44-Lost When lost this aircraft had a total of 131 hours. DS735 was one of two No.514 Sqdn Lancasters lost on this operation. See: DS706. Airborne 1722 30Jan44 from Waterbeach. According to the records that i have the Robert Montgomery killed in the raid on 30th January 1944 was from Northern Ireland. He went to school at Sligo Grammar School in Eire before returning to Northern Ireland. He played football for Portadown and was transferred to Leeds United in 1937.Can anyone help clarify this, i.e is there a date of birth or any other info on the Robert Montgomery on the Kilmarnock Grammar school memorial records. The Northern Ireland Robert Montgomery had a service number of 1366420. These details were in a collection of his papers sold by Bonhams in February 2009. |

It is likely he is not on CWGC as he was a civilian at his death and this due to normal occupational risks.

Thanks for the reply Ken,
As i had indicated a collection of Robert's paper were sold by Bonhams in February 2009 and they contained details of his death in April 1944 etc. Is it possible that the CWGC may have the service number attributed to the wrong Robert Montgomery as they show January 1944 against service no 1366420? Would Kilmarnock Grammar School have any other details? |

Leeds United war hero's memorabilia auctioned

He was a sporting star and a war hero who gave his life for his country. And now the story of Robert "Monty" Montgomery, who played for Leeds United before the Second World War, is to be remembered.
Footballing memorabilia collected by the talented sportsman, whose promising career on the pitch was cut short when he was killed in action, is being sold off at auction later this month.
Monty died at just 22 when he was leading a heavy bombing attack in a Lancaster bomber over southern Germany in April 1944.
The young Irish soccer star was spotted while still a schoolboy in the late 1930s by the then Leeds United manager Billy Hampson, who brought Monty back to Yorkshire to play as centre forward for the club.
Monty also signed up for the RAF, but when he was called to fight for his country he never returned and his full footballing potential was never realised.
Now sporting items including a rare autograph book featuring players from the nation's 1938/39 football clubs are to be auctioned by Bonhams later this month.
Christopher Hayes, of Bonhams sporting department, said: "It is a sad story as the young Monty died at the age of 22 whilst serving for the RAF in the Second World War.
"Monty had attended Sligo Grammar School and signed for Leeds from Northern Irish club Portadown, playing several games for Leeds before the outbreak of the Second World War. He was killed in action over Schweinfurt, southern Germany on the night of April 26-27, 1944."
Monty's Yorkshire Football League medal and a velvet Connacht Rugby Team cap will also be sold at Bonham's in Chester on February 25.
The Yorkshire Football League was a football competition founded in 1920 that existed until 1982 when it merged with the Midland League to become the Northern Counties East League.
The autograph book was collected by Monty during the 1938/39 season.
It contains signatures from clubs including Leeds, Liverpool, Bolton, Charlton, Manchester City, Manchester United, Grimsby, Sunderland, Everton, Derby and Arsenal, with some portraits and newspaper pictures pasted to the book's pages. |

This also points to 170961 being the correct Robert Montgomery.
He was on Lancaster JB679, one of three lost by No. 49 squadron on a raid on Schweinfurt 26/27th April 1944.
JB679 ( EA-D ) Airborne 2131 26 Apr44 from Fiskerton. Crashed at Bure (Meuse) some 12 km WSW from Gondrecourt-le-Chateau. Those killed are buried in Bure Churchyard. P/O R.Montgomery KIA, Sgt R.J.Boyce KIA, F/S S.Smith KIA, F/S R.F.Cluff RCAF KIA, Sgt T.Parkin KIA, Sgt R.J.Mitchell Evd, F/S J.Baker RAAF PoW, F/S J.Baker was interned in Camps L6/357. PoW No.3649. This crew were on their 19th operation.

PO Robert Montgomery (170961) was born in Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland and was indeed the Portadown & Leeds United footballer.
It appears that Paddy's parents moved to Coventry before he was lost.
His namesake, Sgt Robert Montgomery (1366420), from Kilmarnock, also killed in 1944, did not play professional football.
