It takes the form of a memorial cairn.

Jings - I live in the area and didn't know a thing about it!!

Thanks very much for posting this Derek - I'll try and find out exactly where it is and get some photos.

The following is his brother - one of only 2 Frickletons listed on CWGC/SNWM. (The other one, David, Black Watch, probably being a cousin/relative as he came from Avonbridge, near Slamannan and is listed on Muiravonside Cemetery's Memorial.

Name: FRICKLETON, WILLIAM TWADDLE
Initials: W T
Nationality: New Zealand
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Canterbury Regiment, N.Z.E.F.
Unit Text: 1st Bn.
Age: 27
Date of Death: 28/09/1916
Service No: 6/2135
Additional information: Son of Samuel and Elizabeth Frickleton, of Clifford St., Blackball, West Coast, New Zealand.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: I. G. 41.
Cemetery: FLATIRON COPSE CEMETERY, MAMETZ

William isn't listed on Slamannan Civic Memorial. It would have been nice to see him get a mention somewhere - if it's the case that out of the 4 brothers who served, he was the only one to have lost his life.

Anne,

I initially searched the forum for Frickleton's to see if he was previously mentioned anywhere, which he wasn't. But there is another WW1 Frickleton. Dominic who is on the Bannockburn memorial.

I searched for a picture of the Cairn but to no avail, I look forward to seeing your pics when you get some.

Derek.

Mmmmmm......?

I can't find a Dominic Frickleton on CWGC/SNWM. I wonder if David has been wrongly listed on Bannockburn as Dominic?

Name: FRICKLETON, DAVID
Initials: D
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Unit Text: 7th Bn.
Age: 19
Date of Death: 25/10/1918
Service No: S/25465
Additional information: Son of Flora Frickleton, of Bridgehill, Avonbridge, Stirlingshire, and the late Hugh Frickleton.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 7.
Memorial: VIS-EN-ARTOIS MEMORIAL

I would imagine David might possibly have been a relation - Avonbridge is pretty near to Slamannan and the surname Frickleton isn't very common. Perhaps their fathers were brothers .........

Anyone with Ancestry access willing to do some homework?

He is a non comm and will be the man at Bannockburn. A case for him will be forwarded to MOD / CWGC.

Thanks Derek, for bringing him to my attention. I expect he is buried in the local area.

Some more Frickletons can turn up in CWGC searches if you spell it Freckleton.

Went gallivanting up to Slamannan today to take some photos of this memorial only to discover that the plaques have been removed for repair!

Anyone got any idea why they would need repaired already?

Anne

P.S. Doesn't look much like a 'cairn' to me? Confused

P.P.S. I presume 'June 1917' on the gates represent the date of the conflict at Messines?

A great result.

It goes to show there may be many more "non-comms" to be found in plain sight upon memorials all over the country.
