    MEMORIAL TO OLD LORETTONIANS

The tenth anniversary of the founding of the founding of Loretto Chapel was celebrated yesterday. In connection with the service, which was conducted by Mr H,. B. Tristram, headmaster, and the Rev. Mr Craze, chaplain, the unveiling of an oak panel to the memory of the Lorettonians who fell in the South African war also took place. In a short address the headmaster said they were gathered on that day to dedicate to the glory of God their humble memorial of those, once boys in the school, gave their lives for their country in the South African war. They were only few amongst the thousands who perished; but they all did their part in leaving that great memorial of their lives - a memorial far greater than any monument of wood or stone - the integrity of the Empire.

Presumably there are other memorials at the school as well.

From The Scotsman 04 February 1922.

    WAR MEMORIALS

LORETTO SCHOOL.— Designed by Sir Robert Lorimer, A.R.S.A., a beautifully carved oaken organ loft screen, to the memory of 141 old boys and 2 masters, who fell in the war, was unveiled in Loretto School, Musselburgh, yesterday afternoon. Panels bearing the names flank a central recessed, canopied panel, on which appears the following inscription:— "To the glory of God and in proud memory of the sons of Loretto, who in the greatest of all wars, by land and sea and air, faced death for freedom, and passed out of the sight of men." In the course of the fully choral service, conducted by Rev. C. W. Wordsworth, the names of those who had given their lives were read. Thereafter, Mrs Almond, widow of Dr H. Almond, the famous "Head" of Loretto, whose three sons all fell in the war, unveiled the memorial, and a brief address was given by Mr C. J. G. Paterson, chairman of the Directors of the school. A small stone altar, part of the memorial, was also dedicated. Mr H. B. Tristram, brother-in-law of Dr Almond, who succeeded him as headmaster, was present, as also Mr A. R. Smith, who is headmaster of Loretto today.

Hi Guys
I live in Musselburgh and was actually planning to contact Loretto re gaining access to the Chapel etc to take photos. I know several pupils there and have met the Head Master of both the Junior and Senior schools on several occassions. I will contact them once they return from Xmas break.

The War Memorial

The WWI Memorial is the upper panels and the WWII Memorial is on the slope at the bottom of the organ screen.

There are wooden panels round the Chapel which commemorate Old Lerottonians, some have Military connections and some don't.

As you can imagine I have been in many churches and seen many War Memorials over the years and I must admit that this is one of the best.

I see the casualty listed for 1920, Longbotham, is not on CWGC.

Captain Cyril Murgatroyd Longbotham , 2nd Battalion The Leicestershire Regiment, was born in July 1887, and came to Loretto in 1900, leaving in 1903. He joined the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, West Riding Regiment, passed the Army Exam in 1908, and was gazetted to the 2nd Leicestershire Regiment. Captain Longbotham served with his Battalion ( a unit of the Meerut Division, 1st Indian Expeditionary Force), in France and in Mesopotamia. He died at Montana, Switzerland, from illness contracted on active service on January 12th 1920.

Oddly the other man listed for 1920, J.G. Grant, actually died in 1919, the RoH is correct however.

Derek.
