Aberlady War Memorial
Location: Memorial Gardens beside A198 at West end of village
OS REf: NT 460 797

This memorial was erected to four Aberlady men lost in the Boer War and was reused for both World Wars. I will try and get a transcription of the names atht aren't clear as soon as I can.

James Alexander – age 19 – Private (41231) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
James was a vanman living at Ballencrieff, Longniddry, Aberlady when he enlisted in March 1916. He was mobilised in December and posted to the 6th King's Own Scottish Borderers in France in May 1917 where he was transferred to the RSF.
Born 1898 in Bolton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of David and Isabella (Muir) Alexander of Ballencrieff, Longniddry, Aberlady.
Missing in Action on 15 December 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window.


SERG. W. BAIGRIE, GORDON HIGHLANDERS
William Baigrie, Military Medal – age 29 – Sergeant (10350) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William was a coal miner when he enlisted in the Gordons in April 1907. His service record is incomplete but he is known to have been a postman at Aberlady in May 1913 and to have been living with his family in the Main Street. As a reservist he was recalled at the outbreak of war and he landed with his battalion at Boulogne in August 1914. He was wounded three times, in December 1914, in September 1915 and in April 1917 and on each occasion he was evacuated to hospitals in Glasgow, Norwich and Aberdeen. William was awarded a MM after his death.
Born 1889 in Dalkeith, Midlothian. Son of William and Rebecca (Dickson) Baigrie of Elmfield Place, Dalkeith. Husband of Zillah (Wood) Baigrie of Main Street, Aberlady and of Scots Close, Dalkeith, Midlothian who he married in 1913 in Dalkeith.
Died of Wounds on 28 August 1918 and buried in Ligny-Sur-Canche British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Dalkeith War Memorial.

James Bird – age 27 – Lance Sergeant (3978) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was a green-keeper at New Luffness when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion in France in May 1915 and he was promoted to L/Sgt in September but he was killed three weeks later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1888 in Aberlady as James McArthur Bird. Son of James and Elizabeth (Bird) Bird of Sea Cottage, Aberlady and of Blawearie, Longniddry, Gladsmuir, East Lothian. Husband of Agnes (Maillie) Bird of Sea Wynd and of Main Street, Aberlady who he married in 1910 in Edinburgh.
His daughter Agnes died, aged 11 months, in October 1915.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

and his brother – killed on the same day.

L-CPL. T. BIRD, SCOTTISH RIFLES

Thomas Bird – age 28 – Lance Corporal (14139) 10th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Thomas landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1887 in Aberlady. Son of James and Elizabeth (Bird) Bird of Sea Cottage, Aberlady and of Blawearie, Longniddry, Gladsmuir, East Lothian.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


PRIVATE W. BRIMS, ROYAL SCOTS
William Macdonald Brims – age 18 – Private (11812) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was a gardener when he enlisted in August 1914. He was posted to the 1st Royal Scots, who had just returned from India, and landed with them at Le Havre in December 1914. He was evacuated home with frostbite in February 1915 and joined the 12th Battalion in France later that year.
Born 1898 in Whitekirk and Tynninghame (Source:1901 census and GROS – Birth Register)
Son of the late James Brims (died 1909) and of Catherine (Dallas) Brims of 151 High Street, Dunbar, East Lothian.
Missing in Action on 17 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme,France.
Also named on the Dunbar War Memorial.

Yvo was educated at Eton College before taking a place at Balliol College, Oxford from where he was commissioned in the King's Royal Rifle Corps in February 1915. He transferred to the Grenadiers in June and joined his battalion in France in September but he was killed less than a month later.
Born 1896 in London as Yvo Alan Wemyss Charteris Douglas. Son of 11th Earl of Wemyss, Hugo Richard Charteris Douglas, and of Countess of Wemyss, Mary Constance (Wyndham) of Gosford House, Longniddry, East Lothian, of Stanway House, Gloucestershire and of 62 Cadogan Square, London.
Killed in Action on 17 October 1915 and buried in Sailly-Labourse Communal Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window. and on a plaque in Aberlady Church, on the Stanway Parish War Memorial and on the Eton and Balliol College War Memorials.

Lord Hugo Francis Charteris – age 32 – Captain, Royal Gloucestershire Hussars.
Hugo was educated at Eton College and at Trinity College, Oxford before he was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1913. He was commissioned in the Territorial Yeomanry in October 1907 and landed with the 1/1st Regiment in Egypt in April 1915. They moved as dismounted troops to Gallipoli in August. They returned to Egypt in December and became part of an independent command, retitled as 5th Mounted Brigade. Hugo was killed at Katia near the Suez Canal.
Born 1885 in Amesbury, Wiltshire. Son of 11th Earl of Wemyss, Hugo Richard Charteris Douglas, and of Countess of Wemyss, Mary Constance (Wyndham) of Gosford House, Longniddry, East Lothian, of Stanway House, Gloucestershire and of 62 Cadogan Square, London. Husband of Lady Elcho (Lady Violet Catherine Manners) of 32 Montagu Square, London who he married in 1911 in London.
Missing in Action on 23 April 1916 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window. and on a plaque in Aberlady Church, on the Stanway Parish War Memorial and on the Eton and Trinity College War Memorials.

John joined his battalion in France in December 1914.
Born 1895 in Dirleton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of James and Jessie (Logan) Cunningham of Craigielaw, Longniddry, Aberlady.
Missing in Action on 19 August 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window.


LIEUT W. DALGLIESH M.C., ROYAL SCOTS
William Dalgliesh, Military Cross – age 28 – Lieutenant, 1/4th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was commissioned from Company Quartermaster-Sergeant (1954) in September 1915 (as Dalgleish) He joined his battalion at Gallipoli in November 1915. The battalion returned to Egypt in January 1916 and served in Palestine where, as Lt. William Dalgleish, R. Scots he was awarded a M.C. “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He took command of his company when the other officers became casualties in an attack. He captured and consolidated the final objective under heavy fire and repelled a counter-attack, showing great courage and coolness throughout.”
Born 1889 in Aberlady. Son of the late Marion (Erskine) Dalgliesh (died 1911) and of William Dalgliesh (died 1918) of Bickerton, Aberlady.
His brother John Erskine Dalgleish was named as his legatee.
Missing in Action on 12 November 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window.
