Lochmaben War Memorial, Dumfries and Galloway
Location: At South end of village at junction of Lockerbie Road (A709) and Annan Road
OS Ref: NY 083 822
Memorial Type: Statue
UKNIWM Ref: 6022 & 44178
A very youthful KOSB statue on this small memorial. Note he also has a stand collar rather than a stand and fall collar of the 1902 pattern tunic.
The light was quite poor so the photos of the names are not that good.

UKNIWM Ref: 44178
OS Map Ref: NY 083 823
There is also another memorial listed (UKNIWM Ref: 6022) at NY 000 820. This is certainly an incomplete or incorrect map reference and I think the whole entry may be spurious. If anyone knows anything about this entry (6022) could you please post details?
Meanwile, my attempts at the Lochmaben memorial where I think the light was a little kinder to me. Certainly not suggesting the photography is better, but perhaps inscriptions are more readable.

Spoons
I've already posted before that I'm more than happy for someone else to post better photos than mine for any memorial I've already put on the forum. In fact I've removed my photos of the name panels.
I've had a look at the UKNIWM and I think 6022 refers to this memorial. It's not unknown for there to be duplicates in the database. This is quite a low number and must have been one of the early submissions and the data is basic. If someone comes along a couple of years later with a different description then it is not surprising that someone in london would not recoginise it as the same memorial especially if the OS numbers don't match.

Thanks, that's kind of what I though (duplicate) but I don't really know the area so would prefer someone who knows Lochmaben to confirm it.
I do like your photo of the closeup of the lads face looking straight into the camera, very artistic. |

I dont suppose anyone has photos of the War Graves in Lochmaben Cemetery do they? I am looking for a photo of the grave of Andrew Taylor Gibson - he was with 155th (Lanarkshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment RA in the Far East, appears to have been wounded was then transfered to the Pioneer Corps and was discharged, but he passed away in 1946 and is listed on the CWGC website so looks like his death was linked to his War service http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=2715310
He isnt on the memorial, or the Church plaque posted on another thread which is a shame.
Thanks

Hope nobody minds but here are a couple of more photos I thought were worth posting. The weather was good on my visit and the flower beds around the memorial were a credit to the local authority.

The Lochmaben WM Committee selected Beattie & Co design from 40 other desgins. The design was by David J. Beattie, cost of £385, then additions. Other votes were for Scott & Rae, Glasgow £378; Dods & Son Dumfries £378; L. Harrison Glasgow £350; and Hope & Currie, Lockerbie £350. The site for the proposed WM will be in Victory Park and it was presented by Sir R.W. Buchanan Jardine, Bart of Castlemilk.

Information collected from Beattie & Co in July 2010.
