This organisation is creating new memorials at the site of former airfields. I have mailed then and asked for details of existing and proposed memorials in Scotland. In return I have said I would give publicity to any dedication ceremonies either here or perhaps in the SMRG blog?

Had a nice long chat on the phone with Kenneth Bannerman about their project and he was quite complementary about ours.

There are 3 memorials in Scotland at the moment, Largs, Lanark and Dundonald with many more to come. Do we intend to post these on our project?

He will keep me informed of planned new memorials in Scotland.

We have other RAF airfield memorials here so I would say so.

Thanks

I'm not sure Lanark would count since it was never an RAF airfield. I know of the marker which this organisation have placed - it is in fact one of two items marking Lanarks place in aviation history.

Kenneth Bannerman has kindly sent me the following explanation of why Lanark was included on the list.

"One quick historical note: one of your fellow forum contributors has said that Lanark never saw military use but it appears that the airfield was indeed used in this capacity as a landing ground for aircraft passing through during World War One, though more precise details are sketchy."

I stand corrected. I never knew this, interesting.

In that case I shall make sure I get photos of the marker next time I'm in the area.
